When it's dreary and cold outside, your local herb farmer is dreaming of vibrant, potent, beautiful medicinal herbs filling the farm. Tiny little seeds, started in trays on a cold, gray February day will become something amazing, bright, nourishing and healing.

Can we take a moment to see God's awesome design in this process? Seed to plant to harvest to nourishing and healing our bodies. Nothing short of a miracle. ❤️

Milky Oats: Avena Sativa. A multi-use plant (our favorite kind!) for the home apothecary, medicinal
garden and farm. The oat plant may seem inconspicuous and boring. It is often used as a cover crop or animal forage, and if you like oatmeal, this is the plant that produces those yummy little oats!

But, looking deeper in to this special plant, we see, a vibrant, interesting plant that is useful in multiple stages of it's life cycle.

When harvested at the perfect milky top stage, we have a gentle and effective medicinal. As a tonic herb, Milky Oats can soothe our frayed edges, calm the nerves and gently support an overstressed system. The straw, when harvested can be used in teas and infusions for its nutritive and soothing properties.

Then when it's done producing in the garden, it can provide soil cover and return nutrients to your soil when reincorporated. And save some of it to feed your homestead animals too!

This plant is a workhorse in the garden, on the farm, and in your apothecary cabinet! Toss out a few handfuls of Milky Oats early Spring or early Fall and start reaping the benefits of this special plant!
