๐Ÿ” Spoil the gals! Poultry Palace project is done!!

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ Farmer Dale outdid himself - yet again.

๐Ÿ’œ His love for this place shows.

๐ŸชŸ Curious about the window? Keep reading.

Years ago, a couple of overzealous nephews were throwing rocks during a family event and crashed a couple of the coop window panes. Scared the hens something terrible. Me too!

For the hot summers, it worked out to add a screen for air circulation. In winter, an insulated panel is placed over the screen. The middle window has a big crack in it.

Liking visible reminders of lessons learned (we hope!), that window is covered with a film on each side for protection from any sharp edges. Maybe weโ€™ll replace the pane one day! ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ’› The Poultry Palace is a super cute mostly salvaged materials coop and I love it. Farmer Dale would rather call it the Coop de Ville!

โ€œI canโ€™t breathe.โ€ What this lavender plant is telling me these super humid days.

Youโ€™d think after 26 years of this adventure, weโ€™d get this growing lavender thing just right. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Mother Nature is in charge and sheโ€™s not happy. Climate is a big concern for all of us and especially for those growing our food, (yea and many concerns around food safety, yet I digress.)

KNOW YOUR FARMER, right? Shopping at your local farmers market today? Good for you!

Uh, back to lavender! In a chat recently, I learned from several gardeners how their lavender was thriving until it wasnโ€™t. And, two plants side-by-side. Planted and cared for the same way. One doing great and the other dried up and just plain dead.

Sheesh, I know! Weโ€™re right there with you.

How to manage? Letโ€™s wait for consistent cooler temperatures before we start cutting away limbs on struggling plants. It seems as though handling the lavender plants when theyโ€™re stressed elevates the issues.

Like many of you, our location was designated as experiencing Exceptional Drought earlier in the summer. While the fire dangers were ultra scary at the time, the lavender thrived. It was loving that the air above and below the soil was so, so dry. With significant rainfall since mid July, thereโ€™s been a shift to the super humid side and pretty typical southern summer weather. From loving life to suffocating, lavender might be struggling now more than ever.

Itโ€™s the way of growing things. Every year is different. A puzzle challenging us to address concerns head on. While weโ€™re not investing in energy zapping ginormous golf course fans to move that hot humid air, we are digging into other growing methods to reduce the impacts of the climate crisis. Tenacity for the win! Maybe this is the top reason why weโ€™re the longest running lavender farm in North Carolina.

We love lavender! We love sharing our farm with our community when we open on those special days each year. Hang in there. Change is coming to your garden. Fall will be here all too soon. We are so grateful for you. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿชป
