This glow is not the sun or the moon. It is the lights of Raleigh and Durham in the otherwise dark sky. There used to be two distinctive domes but over time it has merged into one dome as the area has merged. It’s a standing reminder to me about urban sprawl and light pollution. Orange County is losing agricultural land at an alarming rate. This area is growing rapidly and I personally think that is a great thing. But as the area expands we need to think about how where we build homes impacts rural zones, agricultural spaces and wildlife. Walkability is beneficial to everyone so build the cities up and not out. Preserve the land that is here so future generations can have food and wild areas. Respect the spaces and people that share this region, our way of life and the wildlife. Urban actions are not contained to the city. They spread out to the surrounding areas. Land prices surge, rural and agricultural viability decreases, light pollution increases, wildlife populations and migrating bird species plummet. So tread lightly and please, turn down your lights. I’d like to be able to see the stars with my grandkids.

It’s that time of year! In a region of multiple million residents, a few farms raise maybe a couple thousand turkeys with care on their land over a number of months. We are one of those.
