New Story Farm

New Story Farm NSF is about reconnection, rediscovery, rethinking, reskilling, restoration, regeneration, responsibility, rebuilding and resilience.

We are a regenerative farm fostering an intentional agrarian community while offering educational & sacred gatherings. So what's the story with New Story Farm? Well, it's a farm whose caretakers are working to enact just that…a new story! We believe that virtually all of the problems that come with civilisation stem from people believing the predominant cultural story which says we are "above" or

"separate" from nature. This story that is omnipresent in our culture tells us that the natural laws of nature are not applicable to us. A "story" is a scenario interrelating man, the world, and the gods."To enact" is to live so as to make a story a reality. "Culture" is a people enacting a story. If you believe that the world belongs to man, you will see all other life as a resource. If you believe that man belongs to the world, you see all other life as partners. On our farm, we are surrounded by annual agriculture and although we grew up eating from this system and have gratitude for that, we also see that annual agriculture is intrinsically unsustainable. Even at it's best, it is extractive and erosive, leading in time to desertification. We want to enact a new story that puts humans back in partnership with all other creation and are working hard at recreating perennial systems that will not only allow us to feed ourselves and our human community, but our broader community of beings is benefitting as well by biomass and more diversity. Starting in 2015, we are going to be hosting workshops on things such as whole farm water design, composting toilets and greywater systems, perennial foraging, medicinal herbs and tinctures, fermenting and preserving, smoking and preserving meats, how to kill and butcher your own animals, etc. We realise what the world needs right now is not another farm selling food to people, we need to teach people to produce their own food in an honest and sustainable way. If you're of the belief that the current trajectory of human civilisation could be better, come join us in co-creating a better way of living in this world. The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House

The last days of Winter are creeping up quickly! Our brains have been conjuring thoughts of green and the start of the growing season. It always begins with a tingle of anxiety about all of the doings and becomings that Springtime frequency brings. We will start again soon, as will beloved elder Charles Brandriff—A lover of Mother Natures beauty and awe. We honor you as these days of deep transformation are upon you. We celebrate you and the decades of loyal devotion to those fortunate to have been in your world. We Bless you with our prayers of Love and Peace throughout this passage and the next. Journey well dear friend, only beauty will remain.

What we’ve been up to this past month- agrarian wintertime living and a neat conference. The crazy weather swings brought warm and sunny days inviting us all to get outside and soak it up. The poultry are quite pleased to be foraging again. We said goodbye to one of the Tom turkeys as this time of the year they fight to the death to breed.

The Sustainable Farming Association had a grazing summit this week with Dr Temple Grandin as the Keynote. I was fortunate to have a conversation with her about what we’re suppose to do in order to bring forth meaningful changes to the broken farming and education systems currently dominating our society. Her message was clear and she stated it several times to make sure we were truly paying attention.

Dr Grandin’s recipe for success when the odds are stacked against you and you’re ideas for change are considered radical:

Write! Get the message out by sharing what we are doing on our regenerative farms and alternative education models. Share How To articles and keep it free. She said she must have written the same article on humane beef handling 200 times just written a little different and new picture ls each time.

Don’t bash! Dr Grandin said to stop bashing the ‘other side’ whether it be the crumbling institutions or toxic big ag. Focus solely on sharing what is working on our farms, our observations and what we did to get here.

Keep politics out of it! If you want to get into politics become a politician or lobbyist but if you want to be a sustainable farmer or alternative educator focus on just that, don’t get distracted by the politics divide and conquer game.

Have multiple projects going so when you hit a wall with one or rejection comes you can pivot to something else. Change takes time and often radical change is met with immense opposition at first. She is a testament to this process, read her books or watch the movie about her early life— if it doesn’t inspire you to keep going against all odds well, nothing will.

Thank you SFA and MNWiC for the once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet and glean some potent wisdom teachings from Dr Grandin and for all that you do to support the MN ecology to thrive.

We’re serious about over here. This epic pile of charcoal gets mixed with cow manure and straw from their winter shelter. Although the cattle roam over the frozen pastures of approximately 18 acres during the cold months, they truly prefer to sleep under a roof at night, especially the young ones. After the charcoal is mixed with the winter cattle bedding it becomes inoculated with the waste nutrients, making it a potent fertilizer for our hay field down the road. It’s too far away to graze and have the cows fertilize directly, so we drive this mix down and spread with a manure spreader. Ideally we would walk the cattle a mile down the gravel road to graze this hay field instead but we haven’t gotten there yet. Maybe after all of the building projects are done we can focus on leveling up our

Thank you Ibarro Orozco for these great pictures. It is a joy to host children here on the farm to learn traditional agrarian skills and how to move with the changing seasons in our daily lives. This is a powerful lesson to learn how to quiet the obsession society has with glorifying busy and 'stuff' and to find contentment and joy with few things but a quality life centered around giving back to nature. Our non-profit Resiliency School helps to root families in traditions and teachings that prepare their children to live a resilient life. The Master is available to all people
And doesn’t reject anyone.
The Master is ready to to use all situations and doesn’t waste anything.
This is called embodying the light.

What is a good man but a bad man’s teacher? What is a bad man but a good man’s teacher? If you don’t understand this, you will get lost, however intelligent you are.
It is the great secret.

Agrarian life is all about food…everyday. In the winter we make bone broth weekly, meals from scratch daily and sourdough bread once in a while. Our carb intake drastically decreases during the cold months. Caretaking livestock, protecting young fruit trees and processing the seeds from last year all take place in Winter. We may use our bodies less but busy all the same despite the cold temperatures. It’s a good life…..actually it’s a great life. We meet so many young folks who say they wish institutional education empowered them with agrarian skills. Imagine the resiliency young people could have, once again, if they had access to learning basic resiliency skills such as growing and preparing real food, livestock care and plant and tree ID. Not only would we have a more capable generation, these resilient kids would be the first generation to turn around the horrific theme of ill physical and mental health that has plagued American youth for decades.

We’re stepping up our this year with bale grazing thanks to the NRCS. It takes a lot longer to feed the cows but it means we get to sit in our favorite lounge chairs next to the fire to warm up afterwards. The strange super wet summer meant we had to plastic wrap our hay to save it from molding, we’ve never had to do that before. Although it can feel quite disappointing to have used all this plastic, we remember to give sincere to have healthy hay for our cows. As we make the rounds on our favorite trail we can hear many pheasants feasting on seed heads in the tall grass prairie. Winter is growing colder as the days are gaining light and the beings we share this land with are thriving due to the abundance of great habitat. This is how we farm working with nature.

Our Story

So what's the story with New Story Farm? Well, it's a farm whose caretakers are working to enact just that…a new story! We believe that virtually all of the problems that come with civilisation stem from people believing the predominant cultural story which says we are "above" or "separate" from nature. If you're of the belief that the current trajectory of human civilization could be better, come join us in co-creating a better way of living in this world.

We feel that food is so grossly undervalued in the American culture that it is often insulting to the grower to sell it. Our aim is fair energy exchange and many times that is not with currency. Our main goal is to sustain ourselves and our immediate community while facilitating a habitat that promotes diversity in the natural community around us. Our surplus will be "banked" in the soil and the life in and above it.

So if you are interested in re-connection, re-discovery, re-thinking, re-skilling, restoration, regeneration, responsibility, re-building and resilience- then come on out to the farm and help grow this community with us.
