Meet The Maker
Hi, my name is Linda Skellenger. The owner/operator and creative mind behind the Uncorked Wine Jelly brand. The business was founded in 2011 out of my curiosity if jelly could be made out of wine. Though it started with just one flavor, Uncorked Wine Jelly has expanded into the current line of 14 delicious, unique jellies, plus one flavor sold exclusively by Boot Hill Museum. Starting as a small local farmers market, home based business, it currently operates out of a state certified kitchen in down town Hutchinson, and is sold at trade shows and retail stores across the United States.
Born and raised in central Kansas, I was the youngest of 4 children. My parents owned the local flower shop in the small town I grew up in. As the youngest child, I spent a lot of time with my Grandma while the older kids were helping at the shop. Along with pies, cakes, and jello salads, grandma made a lot of jelly. Especially sand hill plum jelly. I remember fondly, car rides to the lake and stopping along the way to pick plums in the ditches. And today, I still remember the smell of the jelly boiling on grandmas stove. Fast forward a few years, and my kids have lots of memories (some probably not so fond) of picking plums in the ditches and cow pastures. My love for making jelly stared with my grandma and continued with my kids.
I am often asked how I started making wine jelly. I had always dreamed of working for myself and owning my own business. The opportunity arose to sell at the local farmers market, and knowing this could be my opportunity to work for myself, I began brainstorming what I could make to sell. After several failed attempts at selling various items at the market, I knew I had to come up with something special. One morning, while cleaning up from a dinner party from the night before, I glanced at a half empty bottle of wine and wondered what I was going to do with it. After some thought, I began wondering if I could make jelly out of it. I did, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.
While I spend a lot of time on the road traveling from show to show, I call Hutchinson Kansas home. I love owning my own business, for it allows me time to spend with my 3 children, their spouses, my 7 precious grandchildren, friends and family. For me, creating the jellies has brought so many wonderful people into and wildly changed my life, making this far more than a business, rather a way of life.
