At just one week old, there are already a few helpful clues to watch for. Wing feather patterns can give early hints, with stepped wing feathers often linked to pullets and smoother curves more common in cockerels. Tail development is another sign — future hens usually show faster tail growth, while future roosters tend to develop more slowly at this stage.
These early differences aren’t always 100% accurate, but they’re a great starting point for backyard chicken keepers who want to plan their coop, flock balance, and future egg production. Patience is key, because nature always has the final say — and that’s part of the fun of raising chickens.
