Ranching means being a plumber on Monday, a welder on Tuesday, a farmer on Wednesday, a mechanic by Thursday, or sometimes a little bit of everything all in one day. This is the side of ranching that gets shared less often, but we love it, as no two days are ever the same and there’s always something new to learn.

We’re drawn to horses for lots of reasons, and only some of them have to do with the experiences we can have when we’re on their backs. Horses can also be great spiritual and emotional teachers when we spend time with them on the ground, helping to bring us into the present moment, which is why they are so frequently incorporated into therapy.

Horses communicate largely non-verbally, so we must do the same in our interactions with them through the energy we bring, both on the ground and when riding. They ask us to cultivate greater awareness of our presence, which can be easy to neglect in a culture that tends to intellectualize and abstract. Horses help keep us honest by offering connection when we are present in our bodies and disconnecting with us when we are stuck in our minds. In these moments of connection, we can feel fully alive.

During a workshop this summer at the Paintrock, Kelly Dukarski of will be exploring the practice of relating to horses energetically through equine gestalt, and the wellbeing it can provide. You’ll learn more about how horses can teach us to regulate our nervous systems by mirroring where we are holding unprocessed emotions or pain, both in the saddle and at liberty.

We’re down to just one remaining spot in our foundations of horsemanship clinic with the incomparable Cam Schryver ()!

Cam is a two-time World Champion Extreme Cowboy who’s just as talented a teacher as he is a horseman. For many years, he oversaw the horseback riding program at the Thacher School, and the patience and empathy he developed during his career working with high school students is clearly on display during his clinics. He breaks down the complexities of horsemanship into digestible pieces that his students can grasp no matter how far along they are on their horseback riding journey, creates a supportive group learning environment, and is deeply passionate about improving our communication with horses to make riding more enjoyable for both horse and rider.

Plus, this isn’t a clinic that takes place in an arena. You’ll ride out across the ranch, using the landscape as your classroom, with exercises that are, importantly, lots of FUN!

Learn more about this week and snag the last spot at the link in bio.

And for more advanced riders, we still have a handful of spots available in Cam’s second week, a stockmanship clinic.
