We harvested late last night in Dell City and came away with 12 tons of Muscat and 7 tons of Malbec, all headed straight for the crush pad this morning.

There are only two ways to get there from our home base in Fredericksburg: a seven-hour drive through the rugged West Texas oil patch, or by King Air, landing on a small strip that usually has to be mowed before the plane can touch down.

The sign says Dell City, population 220, though no one seems quite sure the last time it was updated.

For this vineyard visit, Chris Brundrett heads west to meet Philippe (aka “Frenchie”) in the shadow of the Guadalupe Mountains. Together, they walk the rows, taste fruit and survey the year’s crop ahead of harvest.

Texas is a big state, and growing wine here takes us to some far-flung places. This is three minutes of life in one of them.
