π Ever wonder how AI works in sheep?
Artificial insemination (AI) is one of the most effective tools available for improving flock genetics. It allows producers to access elite sires from across the country without the expense of purchasing, housing, and maintaining a ram.
Prior to breeding, ewes are synchronized using CIDRs (Controlled Internal Drug Release devices). CIDRs help bring ewes into heat at approximately the same time, allowing for a more efficient breeding process and a more uniform lamb crop.
On breeding day, a highly trained technician performs Laparoscopic Artificial Insemination (LAI). This minimally invasive procedure uses a small camera to visualize the reproductive tract and place semen directly into the uterus. LAI provides some of the highest conception rates available in sheep reproduction and allows producers to utilize both fresh chilled and frozen semen from elite sires.
Typical conception rates:
β’ Fresh chilled semen: 70β85%
β’ Frozen semen: 50β75%
Why are we hosting haul-in AI events?
Our goal is to make AI affordable and accessible for everyone, especially smaller producers. If you only have 1β5 ewes, purchasing a ram or scheduling a private AI day often isn't practical. By bringing multiple flocks together, we're able to spread costs across participants and give breeders of all sizes access to elite genetics.
Whether you're breeding show lambs, replacement females, or building the foundation of your flock, AI is a powerful way to make genetic progress in a single generation.
