CELOSIA! This is my sixth year of growing the Celosia family and my sixth year of falling deeper in love with them.

They are wonderfully weird, loyal, happy through all of Summer's bummers, gorgeous even when cut and dry.

And did I mention edible?! Also known as Lagos Spinach, Celosia is a native of parts of Africa, and the tender leaves are eaten there in the way spinach is eaten here: cooked or in salads.

This year, I grew somewhere around 32 varieties and each time I grow them I want more!

Let me know if you grow any of the members of my favorite flower family, or have tried them as a fun alternative to spinach!

Fudge was my overseer in the field this morning when cutting for the farmstand. If only he had opposable thumbs he might be a LITTLE more useful.

Wrapped bouquets and mini jars will be on the farmstand at the library only from 3pm today (Sat) though Sunday evening this weekend, Come get 'em at the OUTDOOR stand by the garden at the Independence library

I have started back to teaching last week and it makes it hard to get flowers on the stand by Friday during the school year, BUT if you find yourself in need of fresh, local, and chemical-free flowers mid week, let me know!

This year I am FINALLY doing something I've been wanting to create for years- a dried marigold garland for Dia de los Mu***os!

Why does it have to be marigolds? I was wondering the same, so last year I did some research. I found out that marigolds have been used for thousands of years by people of Mexico in ceremonies to honor deceased ancestors because of the bright color and scent. It was believed that this flower would help guide their ancestors back to the land of the living.

I have long admired the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead/Dia de Los Mu***os for its celebration and remembrace of our loved ones who have left this world.

After Covid took so many from us and my dad passed from it in 2020, my family started celebrating Dia de los Mu***os. Celebrating in this way has been extremely cathartic to me and it has become one of my favorite holidays (possibly my favorite).

So finally I'm getting to make something extra to add to our ofrenda on that day. I'll make sure to post the final product!

Dried flowers were the artistic medium of the day last Saturday!

These were some of the talented and fun ladies who created everlasting bunches in my class at the Independence branch library from the flowers here at Laughing Earth Flower Farm. We mixed a few fresh flowers in with mostly dried and talked about different drying methods and some of the beautiful things that can be made from dried flowers.

Now is the time to start gathering your late summer blooms, tie a string around them and hang them upside down in a cool place with low/no light to dry. After a couple of weeks, you can experiment with your own dried flower bouquet! There are lots of great books at our library about drying flowers too if you need some inspiration!

If you are looking for someone else's gorgeous dried flower creations, check out my artistic friend Rachel at Freshly Brood! I am lucky enough to have some of her pieces hanging in my house!

Whoo! The color combos in the bouquets on the stand this week are the best yet of the season! (An aside...in my humble opinion, mid August through September are the absolute most vibrant and stunning for farm flowers in our area!)

Need a flower fix to brighten up this upcoming rainy week?

I overcut and have about a bucket of flowers left from deliveries today (Tues). If you need a bouquet or just want a big bunch of color, I can meet at the flower stand at the Independence library. Just drop me a message!

I can sell them today and tomorrow. Starting at $15, I can do any size up from there.

This started as three small Rudebeckia, planted 5 years ago in the landscaping around the house.

You've met Fudgie, The Goofy Goat 4, but let me introduce our newest farm addition, Stretch!
We adopted him from the shelter 2 months ago, asking for an outdoor cat (I wanted him to be an adorable mouse murderer to deal with those little guys in the garage).

Well, in 2 months:
-only one mouse,
-one injury from another animal (he has learned some life lessons from that, I'm sure),
-200 times tried to run into the house

On top of that, he gives us huge love every time he sees us, and when we aren't holding him, snuggles with our shoes (see pics).

I've had a lot of cats in my life. I have had MUCH better mousers, but not many with his big personality.

Welcome to the zoo, Stretch. Now, stay out of trouble.
