Some events are special because of the menu. Some are special because of the people.

On June 19th, I have the honor of serving the Sophisticated Ladies Book Club of Lumberton, hosted by a woman who means so much to me; Gwendolyn Roberts-Payne.

Gwen was one of my mentors all through high school. For four years, she encouraged me, believed in me, and helped shape the person I would become. Life has a wonderful way of bringing people back together, and now, years later, I have the privilege of preparing dinner for her and an incredible group of ladies.

They’ll be gathering around great food, good conversation, and a wonderful book. The menu is filled with Southern comfort favorites, and I cannot wait to serve homemade cornbread, pork barbecue, barbecue ribs, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, slaw, sweet tea, and old-fashioned pound cake with traditional icing.

My heart is full of gratitude for the opportunity to give back, in a small way, to someone who invested so much in me.

Thank you, Ms. Roberts, for your friendship, your guidance, and for allowing me to be part of this special evening.
