Our mobile chicken house got a few upgrades this week! We originally built this back in 2022 and it was starting to look a little worse for the wear. But a new roof and revamped door and it’s good for a few more years on the farm. We got our 40 layer hens outside so they can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air and in another month or two we will have the best farm fresh eggs starting to show up! Some may wonder why we move our hens around the farm and there are a few benefits. The girls are staying inside the chicken house now for a week or so to learn to roost in there away from predators, but soon they will have access to the grass and bugs inside the security of an electrified net around the egg wagon. Access to pasture changes the entire flavor profile of the egg, increases the eggs nutrition, and when we add cattle to the farm will allow the birds to help clean the farm pastures up. All the while spreading nitrogen on the pastures that makes grass grow deep green. If you have any questions or want to see more let us know in the comments below!

A thing went to plan! Which doesn’t always happen in case your wondering. We planted some green beans with a 2 row corn planter tonight before the rain. Now as long as we got the spacing right it’s definitely my new favorite way to plant green beans!

It takes a village to run a farm and we are grateful to ours! Our “fun” family outing tonight was pulling the new greenhouse plastic over the metal frame. It’s always exciting because the wind can turn the greenhouse into a parachute at any time. Thankfully we were able to get it secured down with a funny little fastener called a wiggle wire before anyone got a free ride to oz. We are now ready to get all our tiny plants into the greenhouse and out of the shop!

Springtime on the farm is always exciting. Dad has been plowing away, and Amy and I have been working on seeding and repairing the greenhouse. A few weeks ago the wind worked over our big greenhouse pretty good. The plastic ripped loose, the frame bent, the front doors were set free, and the wiggle wire wiggled away. Thankfully most of that is fixed and we are almost ready to pull plastic again! But with the weather challenges of spring comes some really pretty views on the farm!

Farming can be a roller coaster. Some days you get the plastic blown off the greenhouse, crushed piglets, and an overwhelming amount of work to do. The next day your transplanting tiny tomato plants in the new shop optimistic about the year ahead. Through it all God is good and we are blessed to be able to steward this little part of His creation.

What a beautiful weekend to kick off March! We got busy outside cleaning up some of our field edges. Dad started removing overgrown brush along the edges with the brush hog. I cut up a few trees that came down or were overhanging the field. It has been a while since I ran a chainsaw for that long and I could tell yesterday! But grateful to my Dad for giving me a hand! We didn’t get everything done but it was a good start.

Something pretty exciting happened this morning on the farm! We added little piglets!!

It’s been a while since we have posted any updates because we have been so busy with the farm move and rebuild, but we couldn’t help sharing this!

Over the next few weeks we are going to start featuring a lot of the changes we have been working very hard on over the last few months so make sure you keep an eye on the page. As we kick off the growing season here on the farm we will be telling you about what you can buy this season from us, how it’s produced, and why local farming matters!
