Fall Into Balance at Douglass

Today was one of those days that reminds us why we love this work.

Our seniors joined us for Fall Into Balance, an interactive Lunch & Learn centered around five simple areas of healthy aging: hydration, garden-fresh foods, protein, movement, and meaningful connection.

But there was very little sitting and listening today! We turned nutrition education into our Fall Harvest Challenge, where seniors worked in teams answering nutrition questions, playing Fact or Foolery, testing their memory, moving, laughing, and competing for points. The room was FULL of participation! 🍎🎃

And, of course, we learned through the food.

Today’s garden-inspired lunch featured creamy Gouda chicken pasta with Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, and garlic. We used the ingredients on their plates to explore vitamins, protein, fiber, hydration, and how nourishing foods can still be flavorful, familiar, and enjoyable.

What made today special wasn’t simply the information shared. It was watching our seniors use it. They remembered what they learned, encouraged their teammates, asked questions, laughed together, moved their bodies, and shared a meal around the table.

This is what Flavorbyfaith’s NAE Method: Nutrition • Appreciate • Elevate looks like in action. We are creating spaces where food becomes a tool for education, connection, confidence, and healthier communities.

Yesterday, Flavorbyfaith and Indy Farm Co Op hosted another beautiful Arts in the Garden, this time in partnership with From the Ground Up Foods 🌱🎨

Arts in the Garden is about more than gathering outdoors. We are intentionally creating spaces where seniors can experience art, mindfulness, solitude, nutrition, music, and meaningful community connection.

One of the most important parts of this work is connecting our seniors directly with local farmers. We want them to know who is growing food in their community, where they can purchase fresh, nutrient rich foods, and that local farmers are here as a resource for healthier living.

Our seniors painted, enjoyed live music, shared a farm fresh meal, connected with one another, purchased locally grown produce, and experienced a moment of Solitude in the Garden.

We are grateful to From the Ground Up for opening their farm and partnering with us to create an experience centered around health, agriculture, creativity, and community.

This is what collaboration looks like when local farms, food, wellness, and our seniors come together. 🌻

Some moments make you look back at where you started and realize that none of it was wasted.

I grew up in 46205, in half of a double, where my mother learned our home had high levels of lead after we were tested and found to have elevated lead levels. At the time, I didn’t understand environmental health, food insecurity, health disparities or why some communities carried burdens that others did not.I just knew it was home.

Today, I have the privilege of returning to communities like the one that raised me and doing work that is deeply personal. Through the NAE Method, Nourish • Appreciate • Elevate, we are helping people understand that wellness is bigger than what is on the plate. It is about nourishing our bodies, appreciating where we come from and elevating the health and future of our families and communities.

To be recognized for this work at the 5th Annual Garry Holland Community Health Fair is truly a full circle moment.
This recognition is for the little girl growing up in 46205 who had no idea that the very experiences affecting her family would one day help shape her purpose. It is for every mother doing the best she can with what she has and every child whose ZIP code has impacted their access to healthy food, safe environments and opportunity.

This is why I do this work.
What once affected my family now fuels my commitment to help change the story for another family.
To the Garry Holland Community Health Fair, thank you for seeing the work, honoring the commitment and allowing me to stand in a community that reminds me so much of where my own story began.
Nourish. Appreciate. Elevate.
This is purpose. This is healing. This is full circle. ❤️

🌱💚 We took meal prep beyond just preparing meals and showed our seniors how to take food from harvest to table and preserve it for later.

We got hands on with different types of vacuum sealers, talked about when to blanch versus chop and freeze, how to prep fresh vegetables, make homemade sauces, portion ingredients and preserve that garden goodness for future meals. 🍅🌿🧄

And of course we had to make learning FUN! Our winner answered all of today’s questions about vitamins, nutrition and healthy food choices correctly and walked away with her very own vacuum sealer to continue meal prepping at home! 🎉👏🏾

Knowing how to preserve what we grow and buy is just as important as knowing how to cook it. It can help reduce food waste, stretch the harvest, save money and make nutritious meals easier throughout the week.

If your senior organization, community center or wellness program would like FlavorbyFaith to bring this interactive Meal Prep & Food Preservation class to your group, contact us for scheduling and pricing. We would love to bring the learning, food and fun to you! 💚🌱
