It’s taken me a few days to post this. Pi**ed, sad, mad at myself is an understatement. It got really hot here the other day and it didn’t even dawn on me that the babies would die. I made sure my adult rabbits had frozen water bottles. But didn’t consider the babies getting too hot. Our weather has been weird. 50’s 60’s to 90’’s back to 60’s. I had to have my husband do chores out in the chicken and rabbit shed because I can’t even handle what has happened. 😭

New babies in town! I’m pretty sure momma is done! She’s one of my best cats! She’s an excellent mom, and she’s usually the one I graft kittens onto if another mom needs help!

All three are girls! And look at that unique calico!! Such cool markings!

Some days livestock life is beautiful… and some days it absolutely breaks your heart.

Today was one of the heartbreaking days. We lost one of our rabbits while she was trying to give birth, and no matter how much I replay it in my head, it still hurts. When you care for animals, you carry a heavy responsibility. You do everything you can, you research, prepare, check on them constantly, lose sleep over them, and love them like they’re your own. But sometimes, despite your best efforts, nature has a different plan.

That’s the part people don’t always see behind the pictures of baby bunnies, fluffy chickens, and happy farm posts. Livestock can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be devastating. There are moments that make you question yourself and wonder if you could’ve done more.

The truth is, we aren’t perfect. We’re humans trying our absolute best to care for the animals we love. And sometimes “our best” still ends in heartbreak.

Today my heart is heavy. Not because this animal was “just a rabbit,” but because she mattered here. She was cared for, checked on, worried about, and loved. Losses like this never get easier, no matter how tough farm life tries to make you.

So today I’m reminding myself, and maybe someone else who needs to hear it, that caring deeply is not failure. Hurting after a loss means you loved them well. And tomorrow, even with the sadness, we’ll still get up and continue caring for the animals depending on us. That’s livestock life. Beautiful, hard, heartbreaking, and worth it all at the same time.
