🌸 After much thought, I’m closing April Sky Flower & Herb Farm.

I am so grateful for everyone who supported the small hobby farm since the days of the pandemic — from farmers market visits to custom bouquets, homecoming and prom corsages to vendor fairs — for all the joy these flowers brought to our community over the years.

Due to health and personal reasons, it’s time to step back and focus on what’s sustainable for me right now but will carry these memories forward with gratitude.

Thank you for being part of this journey! 🌷

2025 Update: My first year was a great start. 🏆 Each year since then, I planned to plant more and sell more. But as you may have noticed, posts about when and where to buy my flowers were never made once spring and summer would arrive. As spring would hit the last two years, I assumed I had just been too lazy over the winter and I just needed to get back into the rhythm of physical work. I would get a nice start but then not have enough flowers to make farmers market appearances. I recently discovered it wasn’t due to laziness or winter inactivity, but true health issues. That year where we were all forced to stay home (you know that thing in 2020) made me resurrect a childhood dream of owning a flower farm and selling bouquets, but since returning to normal work and experiencing the painful health issues, this dream has proven far harder than I planned. I am currently evaluating whether to keep going and try again this year or whether to throw in the towel. Stay tuned. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s Iowa Horticulture Week! 🌸🥕🍓
While we have not yet made it to farmers markets this year, many Iowans are enjoying what the land has to offer with Iowa-grown goods from other farms. Iowa may be known for corn and soybeans, but we can’t forget that horticulture, whether flowers, Christmas trees, fruit and vegetables, is vital to this state.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Well done, Iowa horticulturalists!

I always say “I’m not going to grow that again” or “I’m not ordering that for next season,” because it doesn’t get tall enough or doesn’t bloom well (or at all), and then a random, single plant survives the winter or unknowingly reseeded and shows me what it can really do (like this 5 foot tall beauty!) and it’s back on the seed catalog list again!🌸😍 Should I order these for next year?

Hello friends! I wanted to provide an update for customers who may be wondering where I am this year. Due to some health issues early this spring and a minor surgery, I decided not to sell much this year, but be assured I am doing a lot behind the scenes to make next year a fantastic year.🤞🏼I’ve planted hundreds of lilies and other flowers to be able to have even more to offer to all of you next year. I hope you stick with me through this rebuilding year and find me at the farmer’s market next year!

No more worrying about the poin•set•a vs. poin•set•e•ah debate because that’s not its name anyway!

No more worrying about the poin•set•a vs. poin•set•e•ah debate because that’s not its name anyway!

The cuetlaxochitl flower is native to Mexico.

This is a sacred flower that was colonized and written off in history as a "discovery" of Joel Poinsett’s in the 1800's.

Joel Poinsett was a slave owner who promoted white supremacy and slavery in his travels and in his political career. He has also been responsible for the displacement of many indigenous peoples along the way by forcibly removing them from their native lands.

The Cuetlaxochime originally had nothing to do with christianity or Christmas, they were a sacred plant used in ceremonies to celebrate the birth of Huitzilopochtli during our winter solstices. They were also used for medicinal and healing purposes to cure sicknesses, aid the flow of breast milk, as well as for dyeing fabrics.

Reverse the harm by calling our xochime by its original name, Cuetlaxochitl, and correcting those around you.

Pronunciation: Kwe•tla•so•cheetl
