WE'RE A FARM, NOT A GROCERY STORE
Here lately our customers will message us: "Do you have Chuck Roast?" And our response is, "Not at this time."
Do you have Brisket? We're out right now.
And sometimes we feel like we need to apologize. Like, somehow we've failed because somebody came looking for something and we couldn't provide it that day.
But then we remind ourselves.........this is a farm, not a grocery store.
There isn't a semi pulling up behind C&N Farms every night unloading another pallet of Chuck Roasts. Our roasts started with an animal standing in our pasture.
Before there was a Brisket, there was a cow. There was breeding. Nine months of pregnancy. A calf hitting the ground.
There were bottles some nights, vaccines, minerals, hay, grass, fence repairs, vet calls, and a whole lot of waiting.
Then processing. Then cutting. Then packaging.
And here's the part people don't always think about. A steer only has so many Chuck Roasts. We can't call the pasture and ask the next one to grow four extra because everybody wants a Chuck Roast this weekend.
And when the Chuck Roasts are gone, they're gone until we process another animal. That's what buying directly from a farm looks like. Sometimes we have exactly what you're looking for. Sometimes we have something else you might absolutely love, and sometimes you're going to have to wait.
There are all kinds of ways food is produced in this country, and large-scale agriculture has an important job feeding a whole lot of people. But this is how we've chosen to raise ours. And that means availability isn't always convenient.
We're learning not to apologize for that because an empty spot in our freezer doesn't mean this farm failed. Sometimes it means somebody loved what we raised enough to buy the last one. And sometimes a freezer full of ground beef but no Briskets isn't "nothing".
There are YEARS of work represented in that freezer. There are early mornings in there. There are hay bills in there. There are broken fences and muddy boots and sleepless nights in there.
There are cattle we've watched since they were calves. There is land being maintained. There is a local processor earning a living. There is a family farm trying to stay a family farm.
There is food. Real food raised by somebody you can actually talk to. So when you buy directly from a farmer, you're getting something a grocery store can't put on a shelf.
You're getting a connection to the person who raised your food. Ask us what our cattle eat. We'll tell you.
Ask us where they were raised. We'll show you the pasture.
Ask us how they're handled. We'll talk your ear off.
Ask us when we'll have Chuck Roasts again.........
Well, that answer is "not today". And we're finally learning that's okay. Because our goal is not to make C&N Farms look like a grocery store. Our goal is to keep C&N Farms looking like a farm.
And we never want to become so worried about keeping every freezer full that we forget why we chose to raise food this way in the first place.
So if you come looking for something and we're sold out, please don't give up on us. Ask what we DO have. Try another cut. Let us build you a box. Or tell us what you're waiting for and we'll let you know when we have it again.
Because around here, availability changes. Seasons change. Animals grow on their own timeline. But one thing isn't changing:
We're going to keep raising food in a way we're proud to put on our own family's table. And we're pretty proud to put it on yours too.
