Did you know there's a Catfish Trail? We checked one off the list and can't wait to try others. Best part was knowing we were eating US Farm Raised Catfish!

We spent a day teaching East Bernard Brahma Brain Camp all about catfish farming. The best part of the day was watching our next generation know enough to take lead on the presentation and bring up points I hadn't thought about explaining.

We had a first on the farm today! Texas Farm Bureau's crew brought our catfish farm into hundreds of classes across the state and in the process we will have impacted nearly 16,000 elementary aged students!

It was especially neat that our local schools with teachers and students we personally know were watching live!

Why do so many farmers let their corn die in the field? Isn’t that a waste?

The short answer is, they have to! This type of corn is called field corn, and farmers need it to dry on the stalk so they can harvest it. Grain corn is dried down to somewhere near 15% moisture before harvest, unlike sweet corn which is typically harvested while the moisture is above 70%.

Some farmers have to harvest before the ideal moisture content is reached, in this case they have to dry the corn down in machine dryers. They can do this with their own dryers or pay their buyer to dry the grain. This additional cost can be a factor in production.

As field corn reaches maturity it can lose 0.5% - 0.8% moisture every day! Even higher dry down rates can be reached in high temperature areas.

As in all things in life, too much of a good thing isn't a good thing. This crop had 30 plus inches in May that limited its yield potential and now as we near harvest the forecast is shaping up to increase anxiety about the potential for damage.

Farming isn't for the faint of spirit or the weak in faith!
