Keep JAMcakes in mind for all of you summertime events! This is my 16 year old baking business please support her!
Hi my name is Jordan Alexis Mills and I am the owner and operator of J.A.M.cakes. I started my business 3 years ago @ 12 after reading an American Girl book named “A Smart Girl’s Guide to Money” by Nancy Holyoke. I was reading through the book when I saw a section on creating your own business cards. I thought I would try making a business card because I was home bored. Since I liked cooking and baking I thought it would be cool to start a baking business to make some extra money. I first made a simple business card I created on my own computer and printed it out on regular paper. I thought of the name Jordan’s Famous Pastries. When my parents came home I showed it to them and they were really surprised at what I had done, but didn’t think I was really serious. I explained to them my idea about baking cupcakes, brownies and cakes and selling them to their friends and co-workers for different things. Once they realized I was serious they said they would support me and start me out with the supplies I needed to get my idea off the ground. The first thing my mom did, was order “real” business cards! I thought the name of the business should be something a little “catchier” so I thought of J.A.Mcakes, using the initials in my name. Once the business cards were ordered and all of the supplies were bought, my journey into owning my own business began.
I have come a long way to get to where I am today, I have done a Sweet 16, baby showers, kids and adult birthday parties, Mother’s Day brunches and small gatherings, some people even have ordered just to support a young entrepreneur. This weekend for the first time I’m baking cupcakes for a bridal shower and wedding reception!
Although I use the money I make to buy more supplies as I need them, I am also able to save a lot of the money and also buy some of the things that I want. I bought my own Ipod touch and PSP To Go when they first came out, as well as other things. Many people are surprised when I tell them I’m only 15 and have my own business, but it goes to show you that if you follow your dreams, you can accomplish anything at any age!!
