Did You Know it Wednesday: Why use EPDs and Indices to Make Decisions for Bull Sales?
Until the development of expected progeny differences (EPDs), most purchasing decisions of bulls were based on phenotypic measurements and features as an estimate to how that bull’s calves would perform. Phenotypes (P) are the combination of genetics (G) and environment (E); (P = G + E). There are components of genetics that aren’t heritable, such as the unique combination of genes that results in hybrid vigor, or inbreeding suppression. These gene combinations will influence an animal’s own phenotype, but won’t be passed down to their offspring. EPD estimates only the heritable genetic component of that animal. So why would you want to make a purchase decision just on the genetic merit?

Did you know it Wednesday: When it comes to performance data collection, seedstock breeders, cow-calf operators, managers, and hired hands — all play a pivotal role in collecting phenotypic measurements and reporting them into a system to use the information to its fullest extent. This rests on your shoulders, my friends. If you want to get the most complete picture of the genetics of your herd, then you have to commit yourself to collect the most complete set of records AND using them to analyze your operation and your genetics.
BIF Board Member and ASA Director of Science and Education shares tips on Performance Data Collection.
