Pop Pop's Garden

Pop Pop's Garden Johnson County Iowa vegetable and black raspberry farm. Pop Pop, as he is affectionately known by his grandkids, moved to the Iowa City area in 2017.

Having worked on the family farm in SW Iowa and been a lifelong gardener, he desired to try small scale vegetable farming, just as his grandfather had done 100 years ago. He joined a group of diverse, enthusiast farmers in leasing land at the old Johnson County Poor Farm in 2020. It is Pop Pop's hope to not only feed his extended family, but offer healthy food to the community both through local f

armers' markets and food pantries. All profits are donated to local charities. His goal is to share not only healthy food, but his love and knowledge of food production.

It's been quite a while, but we're harvesting lots of asparagus this spring. We grow it organically, just outside Iowa City. If you would like to buy some, let us know! It's $5.00 a pound and we are happy to deliver four pounds or more to the greater Iowa City community (including Tiffin and North Liberty.) We also sell it through Field to Family for smaller amounts!

We're back! We organically grow fresh produce outside. We've had a bit of a slow start, but we hope to see you soon. You can find our produce starting this week online at Field to Family, at the University Heights farmers market on Tuesdays from 4-6 (new-old location in the empty parking lot on Melrose next to the golf course,) and on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 at the Coralville farmers market (Iowa River Landing.)

Right now we have some nice spinach, kale, lettuce, radishes, mint, apple mint, thyme, dill, oregano, and rhubarb.

At the markets we will also have Pop Pop's hand carved wooden spoons and Nana's black raspberry and strawberry rhubarb jams, made simply from our fruits, sugar, and lemon juice.

Thank you all for making gardening and marketing so enjoyable. We are taking a short break, but you will still find our friend Karen with our produce at the University Heights Market across from Kinnick on Tuesdays from 4-6 until the end of September.

Hopefully we will be back with Field to Family in October with winter squash and sweet potatoes, along with onions and garlic.
Happy gardening and healthy eating!

I have been busy with grandkids, but Pop Pop is still busy in the garden! We enjoyed having those grandkids help us out at the University Heights Farmers Market a couple of weeks ago.
Corn is done, but we do have some wonderfully sweet watermelon to offer. Also plenty of beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, eggplant, carrots, onions, garlic, shallots, and some okra (it's been a bit slow this year.)
Hope to see you at the University Heights Market (across from Kinnick) on Tuesdays from 4-6, the Coralville Market at Iowa River Landing on Wednesdays for 4:30-6:30, or online with Field to Family.
Happy gardening!

Corn and Bean time!
The garden is in full production mode. Bicolor sweet corn, Haricort Verts (French green beans) onions, garlic, and shallots are all ready. We still have beets, eggplant, peppers, broccoli, cucumber, kale, carrots, summer squash, and some nice cherry and early girl tomatoes. Exciting except the heirloom tomatoes are lingering in the green stage and we are so ready to enjoy German Pinks and Hungarian Hearts!

Please look for us at the University Heights Farmers Market on Tuesday from 4-6 at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel parking lot across from Kinnick, and at the Coralville Market on Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 at Iowa River Landing south of the Staybridge Suites. You can also order online from Field to Family. Happy gardening and enjoying all the Iowa summer produce!

The black raspberry harvest was fast and furious this year! I'm afraid they are no longer available, but for those who enjoy the jam, it will be making a comeback soon. This will be our last week for sugar snap peas, but our first week for purple kohlrabi and Walla Walla onions. For those unfamiliar with Walla Walla's, they are a large, sweet, slicing onion; wonderful both raw and cooked. Their downfall? They are not good for storing, so try a few while they're available!

We still have plenty of beets, kohlrabi, kale, collards, cauliflower, and garlic scapes.

Find us at the University Heights Market on Tuesdays from 4-6 in the Marriott Courtyard Hotel parking lot across from Kinnick, at the Coralville Market on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 in the south parking lot of the Staybridge Suites at Iowa River Landing, and online at Field to Family!

It's been a busy week at the garden! Some of our granddaughters came out to help pick black raspberries. We have robins and killdeer nesting in the field, keeping us on our toes! We've been harvesting Sugar Snap Peas, Black Raspberries, Cauliflower, Kale, Collards, Kohlrabi, and beets.

We're happy to announce that our produce will now be available through Field to Family's online farmers market, as well as the University Heights Farmers Market (Tuesdays from 4-6 in the Marriott Courtyard Hotel parking lot across from Kinnick Stadium) and the Coralville Farmers Market (Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 in the parking lot on the south side of the Staybridge Suites at Iowa River Landing.)

This is certainly a year of challenges in the garden, but I am happy to report we have lots of sugar snap peas ready to go! The black raspberry crop is a big question mark right now. There are berries on the vine and some substantial rain would really make a difference. We also have lovely beets, greens, kohlrabi, and herbs, all organically grown at the Historic Johnson County Poor Farm. Please come see us at the University Heights Farmers Market on Tuesdays, from 4-6 at the Marriott Courtyard hotel across from Kinnick Stadium, and on Wednesdays at the Coralville Farmers Market from 4:30-6:30 at Iowa River Landing, south of the Staybridge Suites.

Look for us at the University Heights Farmers Market on Tuesdays, from 4-6 at the Marriott Courtyard hotel parking lot across from Kinnick Stadium, and at the Coralville Farmers Market on Wednesdays, from 4:30-6:30 in the parking lot next to the Staybridge Suites at Iowa River Landing.
