Today we relocated the sprayer for round 2 of spraying.

Some of our cover crop on our bean ground is being stubborn, so we are going to hit that again with another round of spray. All the acres will get sprayed again with another round to prevent weeds from growing this summer.

As we build our soil health, we are aiming to reduce our chemical usage. This will allow us to save money on chemicals as well as help increase activity in our soils and promote healthy crops and soils.

Chemicals are an important tool for us, but we intend to use them as ONE of the tools in our toolbox. Increasing our soil health will allow us to reduce our chemical and fertilizer dependence.

We have learned that this is not an easy or quick process. If the soil is not healthy, it is very hard to reduce your chemical and fertilizer use. Over the long term we will reach our goals. In the short term, we will use all the tools in our toolbox to help us in the process.

The last 2 days were unexpected.

On Friday, Lane took the planter out to set GPS lines in the next field. While he was out there, he discovered that it was fit to plant. He got about 70 acres done on Friday.

On Saturday he finished at Nichols and headed to our farm south of Lone Tree. He got all of our corn on bean ground planted.

All we have left is our corn on corn ground. We should get that wrapped up today!

Wake up in the morning. Check to see how much rain you got. Figure out what you’re going to do besides plant today 😂

This is the field where the planter currently sits in anticipation of another fun filled day of planting. Unfortunately, the planter will not be able to fulfill its desire to plant today.

As you can see, this field has received 13” of rain so far this season. That is about 3” more than the 10 year average.

We are thankful that the soil is getting caught up on moisture! If we can get a day or 2 of sun and a slight breeze, we will be able to finish up planting and move on to the summer phase of operations.

The rain finally let up long enough for us to get some more corn in the ground.

We got around 215 acres done yesterday. I’m not sure what time Lane finished up the last field, but it was around 2-3am. Around 4-4:30am it started raining again. We had lots of thunder and lightning.

The skies are starting to clear this morning, but it will take a while to dry out.

We wanted to finish at the home farm so we could move to some of our sandy ground. This should allow us to run a day or two earlier when it dries out again.

We have about 2.5 days left of corn planting and then we will have all the seeds in the ground 😁

Wyatt was excited to try his new mower out yesterday. As you can see, it started the day squeaky clean. It did not end the day the same way.

He managed to drive it thru a mud hole and run it out of gas. His skills are improving. By the end of the summer, he’ll be a regular pro 😁

This is the same field about 2 weeks apart.

The brown picture is after we sprayed and terminated the cover crop. This field was very thick with rye. It was beans last year.

Last year we didn’t terminate our rye before planting. We let it grow until about June and terminated it by crimping it. We had tested this method on 80 acres the year before. It worked great.

2023 was not the year for it though. It was very dry and the rye grew at different rates. We had to crimp it several times. It ended up reseeding itself. So we had rye growing under the beans starting around August. This was not ideal.

It ended up making a really good stand of cover crop, but it was not exactly what we were shooting for. Another lesson learned in the cover crop saga. We tweaked our methods this year and we are much happier with the results and planting conditions.

We tried to plant all of our cover crops in strips this year. To accomplish this, we blocked off some rows on the drill.

Last year, when we tried to plant into a heavy stand of rye, the planter struggled to get the seed in the ground. We decided to remedy the problem by planting the cover crop in strips. This allows us to plant the corn and soybeans in between the rye rows.

So far, we have seen good results planting into these conditions.

Implementing cover crops has had its challenges, but we are working on improving our systems. This is one of the improvements we learned from our first year of all acres having cover crops.
