Millie Ray and Sons

Millie Ray and Sons Millie Ray first began making her rolls in 1979 from her home kitchen in Homewood, Alabama.

Millie Ray and Sons' famous orange, cinnamon, and yeast rolls and buttermilk biscuits are made in nut-free bakeries, and may be found in the frozen section at Target, Piggly Wiggly, Central Market and many specialty stores in the south and midwest. Millie took her mother’s handed down recipe and modified it to her liking. When asked to bring her bread to the local garden club meeting, she reached

for her orange roll recipe and started the oven. She soon began to receive orders from friends and family, who, in preparation for the holidays, wanted to serve her sweet and delicious rolls. In addition to an active career in real estate, Millie owned a small catering company called Delectable Edibles, serving parties, corporate meetings, and small gatherings. Her orange rolls were always requested, and she would serve them with every meal: breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. When Millie moved to Montgomery, AL in 1991, she focused most of her time on real estate and much less on catering. During the holidays however, Millie’s husband and two sons would help transform the kitchen into a roll manufacturer. Her two sons, Ben and Ryan, always believed their mother had the ability to sell the rolls on a much larger scale. Being active in the restaurant business, they wanted to expand what their mother had created. They took the rolls to ten stores in the Atlanta area, meeting with owners and dropping off sample cases. Within two weeks, the family received calls from all ten stores, wanting to carry the product. Though focusing on small independent stores, butcher’s and farmers’ markets, and specialty stores in its beginning, the brand soon began to grow and started to receive emails and phone calls from larger distributors and grocery store chains. Millie Ray and Son’s rolls are currently sold in over 200 stores across the Southeast and Midwest, and in many restaurants.

Our Story

Millie’s story begins in her Birmingham, Alabama kitchen in 1979. Millie, a homemaker, mother of two boys, and wife to her loving husband Ben Ray. Like many Southerners of her generation, she was raised in a time when everything was homemade from scratch. This is when she developed a deep love and passion for baking.

Millie Ray made her famous orange rolls for the first time in 1979, when she learned that her garden club was gathering for an upcoming potluck. She developed her own recipe for orange rolls with the idea of creating bite-sized rolls. Bucking the tradition of baking the dough in one pan, she rolled out the dough and cut each one to be placed in a muffin tin. She then added a zest of fresh orange. From this point forward, the story tells itself as demand from the garden club grew into larger circles.

These orders grew into a full-time catering business. When the holidays came her husband and two sons would pitch in to ensure that the rolls never lost their hand rolled, made from scratch quality.

Millie’s two sons Ben and Ryan always believed that she could sell them on a larger scale and wanted to expand what their mother had created. In 2012, Ben and Ryan got involved in the family business. With a focus on small independent stores, butcher markets, farmer markets, and specialty stores, they took sample cases of rolls to ten stores in the Atlanta area to meet with owners and gain feedback. Within two weeks, all 10 stores called back to request carrying the product in their store.
