Put a group of Shimmick and Axia Electric project managers in one room, and there's no shortage of opinions, project stories, or ideas.

Our project management leaders recently gathered in Southern California for two days of training, collaboration, and candid discussions about how we can continue improving project performance and achieving Shimmick's strategic goals.

The team tackled topics ranging from safety, financial performance, and contract management to strengthening client relationships, solving challenges in the field, and helping identify and win future work.

With experience spanning different projects, markets, and delivery methods, the group brought valuable perspectives to the table. The focus now is on putting those ideas into practice, strengthening how we work together, and delivering better outcomes for our clients.

Jesus Jimenez joined Shimmick in 1993, following family members who were already working here. More than three decades later, he’s still here—and still passing that experience on.

Jesus started with Shimmick on a project in San Francisco and has spent the years since doing a little bit of everything. He’s also become a teacher on site, helping newer employees learn how to do the work right and, most importantly, safely.

Originally from Jalisco, Mexico, Jesus continues to share the culture and traditions he grew up with his family in Northern California. His advice to the next generation entering construction?

“Everybody needs to start from the bottom up.”

As we close out our Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight series, Jesus's story is a fitting reminder that the greatest legacies aren't just the projects we build, but the knowledge, values, and experience we pass along.

“I didn’t choose HR, HR chose me.” 😂

Jessica Calderon's career in HR began unexpectedly in 1999, when a temporary assignment covering reception turned into something much bigger.

A few months later, she was helping schedule interviews and taking on HR responsibilities. What started as a temporary role became a career spanning more than 25 years with Shimmick and its legacy companies.

Along the way, her career took her to a major power plant project in her home of Puerto Rico, where she supported a workforce of nearly 1,000 people.

Today, Jessica continues that journey as part of Shimmick's HR team, bringing decades of experience and the resilience, respect, and commitment to helping others that she connects to her Puerto Rican heritage.

Electrical construction wasn’t necessarily the plan for either Chris Aviña Sr. or Chris Aviña Jr., but somehow, it became part of the family story.

They’ve spent years working in the industry—including 13 years at the same company before both eventually landed at Shimmick.

For Jr., electrical clicked because he likes puzzles and problem-solving, along with the satisfaction of being able to point to something when the work is done and say, “I built that.”

For Sr., the values rooted in his Hispanic heritage—family, hard work, respect and accountability—have shaped more than his career; they’ve shaped the way he leads. He believes in sharing what he knows, helping younger team members grow and making sure people know they are supported and respected. Because, as Sr. puts it, when you treat people with respect, amazing things can happen.

His message to the team? “Let’s take over the world.”

And while father and son have shared an industry, companies and even a name (yes, Jr. gets emails intended for Sr. 😂), this month brought a surprising first: they walked a jobsite together for the first time at Shimmick’s Lake Elsinore project.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the Aviñas, their Mexican roots and the values that continue across generations—even as each builds something of his own. 💙

Two weeks. That's how long Nathalia Valenzuela was supposed to work at Shimmick. Nearly 18 years later, she's still here! 🎉

In 2008, Nathalia joined Shimmick for a temporary assignment scanning invoices. A chance conversation with the safety director introduced her to a field she never imagined pursuing, and by 2011, she'd found her place on Shimmick's safety team.

One of her most meaningful accomplishments? Helping develop the Spanish-language version of Shimmick's Safety Orientation video. As a bilingual employee whose parents immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico, Nathalia was able to use her language skills to make important safety information more accessible to employees across the company.

The hard work, perseverance, and commitment to helping others that her parents instilled in her continue to guide her career today.

For Nathalia, honoring her heritage means carrying forward the values her parents taught her—and finding meaningful ways to put them into practice.

Big projects. Complex challenges. Experience makes the difference.

Jaime Hurtado has joined Shimmick as our new Chief Legal Officer, bringing more than 20 years of legal experience across the infrastructure and energy industries.

From senior leadership roles at Northland Power and Dragados to supporting major transportation, water and energy projects around the world, Jaime brings a strong combination of legal expertise and real-world construction industry experience.

He understands the challenges behind complex infrastructure projects and will play an important role in supporting our teams, managing risk and helping Shimmick move forward with confidence.

Before he was Axia Electric President, Fernando De Leon had his sights set on flying jets. ✈️

An unexpected introduction to construction while studying mechanical engineering at UC Davis changed everything.

More than 30 years later, Fernando has helped build some of California’s most recognizable infrastructure, joined Shimmick in 2009 and worked his way into leading Axia Electric.

But his perspective on success has evolved along the way.

What began as a focus on proving himself and preparing for the next opportunity has grown into a commitment to creating opportunities for others.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re recognizing Fernando’s leadership and his dedication to mentorship, representation and helping the next generation of construction professionals succeed.

Collaboration shouldn’t depend on the delivery method.

Yesterday at CONSTRUCT 2026, Shimmick EVP & COO Sarah Tacker joined fellow panelists to introduce the Collaborative Leadership Project, a new AGC of California initiative exploring how to drive collaborative behaviors on every project.

The challenge: put problems on the table early, share information openly, and take responsibility for the whole project. Collaboration has to hold up when the pressure is on.

What are students looking for as they start their careers? 👷🎓

Mentorship. Hands-on experience. Opportunities to grow. And the chance to contribute from day one.

Those are some of the conversations our team has been having with students as our fall recruiting tour continues. We’ve enjoyed meeting students interested in engineering, construction, safety and related fields, and talking about the opportunities available at Shimmick and Axia Electric.
