Well… someone left a gate open 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️

Thunder decided the neighbor’s grass really is greener 😉 and took himself on a little adventure. But the funny thing is—he knew exactly when it was time to come home. The second he saw the feed pickup, he didn’t hesitate… just turned and came running.

Made me think a lot about us. How easy it is to wander off chasing what looks better, but deep down we still know where home is. And when we see the Father calling, there’s nothing better than turning around and running back to Him.

“As the father said… ‘Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’” — Luke 15:23–24

Before breeding season starts… every bull has to pass the test.

Each year we perform Breeding Soundness Exams (BSEs) on all of our bulls.

A BSE evaluates:
• Semen quality
• Reproductive anatomy
• Overall health and soundness

Why is this important?

Because one bull can breed 25–40 cows in a season. If that bull is infertile or subfertile, it can mean open cows and a smaller calf crop next year.

A quick exam now helps prevent big problems later. Good cattle management is about reducing risk before it ever hits the pasture.

Do you BSE your bulls every year before turnout?

Meet Thunder ⚡

After the storms that rolled through last night, the name felt pretty fitting. Thunder is our corral donkey, and he plays a small but important role in our calf backgrounding program.

During weaning we try to expose calves to different sights, sounds, and movement to help desensitize them and build adaptability. The goal is simple: calves that handle stress better tend to stay healthier, eat sooner, and perform better as they move into the next stage.

Thunder may look like he’s just hanging around the pen, but he’s actually helping us raise hardier, more resilient calves.

Just another small piece of the weaning protocol here at JCH Ranch.

As we continue weaning our fall calves, we use fenceline weaning to help make the transition smoother. This method allows cows and calves to maintain nose-to-nose contact across the fence, which research has shown can reduce stress, pacing, and bawling compared to abrupt separation.

Lower stress during weaning supports better feed intake, immune function, and overall calf health during this critical stage.

It’s a small detail in the process, but attention to details like this is part of our protocol and commitment to doing what’s best for our cattle.

If you have ever been kept up at night due to calves bawling, leave a 🙋‍♂️ below ⬇️

One of these things doesn't belong.. can you identify it? Comment below ⬇️

We're in the process of weaning a group of fall-born calves. When all the calves eagerly approach the bunk for food, it's a positive indicator of their health. It's essential for us to interact with the calves during feeding, promoting their acclimation to humans and enabling daily health checks. The key lies in these subtle yet significant details.

(p.s. they don’t mind seeing us everyday because we come with “delicious” stuff)
