In 2010 my hubby and I bought 21 acres between Negaunee and Ishpeming with the intention of opening a public trail riding business.
And we did! And we didn’t call it Heritage Hills for nothing! It was part of the original Wawonowin golf course built in the late 1800’s and so we uncovered many old paths, fairways, and 2-tracks from the golf course for our trails. This was also a bustling mining area so there’s remnants of ancient mining roads along with the main route that was used to go from Ishpeming to Negaunee before the highway was built! There’s also a few very scenic rock bluffs where a few ski jumps where built back in the day, and the faint remains of a horse race track near by - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
Anyway, during our first few years here we worked tirelessly on the trails. We trail blazed loops through the woods too, all the while collecting horses; some of our own, some borrowed, some leased. It was a lifelong dream of mine to have a place where those that weren’t able to own a horse could experience them; like my situation growing up in southern California.
We had quite the operation going with 3 or 4 rides a day (weather permitting) camps, classes, therapy sessions and sleigh rides in the winter! It was a lot to keep up with so little by little started simplifing things…..
We don’t offer public rides or sleigh rides anymore, or hold classes or camps. We still have a few of our own horses and board a few, and I continue to hold therapy sessions occasionally. We have a few camp sites and welcome campers with horses and we still try to maintain the trails the best we can for ourselves, our boarders and campers.
We have a ride planned for Upper Peninsula Trail Horse members and friends and potential members on July 22nd, so mark your calendars and stay tuned for more info.
Keep in mind we do share some of the trails with the local mountain bike group but they are a great crew and know how to share the trails with us horse riders. Being a Monday not many bikers will be out anyway, and I ride on some ‘less traveled’ trails too.
I’ve included a few photos of our beautiful and very diverse riding area! Hope you can join us for the group ride July 22nd!
