A very special edition to our farm. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Meet the newest little member of our herd. A healthy heifer calf born a few days ago, but her story is so precious to us!

The very last photo is of our beloved 318, who we unfortunately lost to old age last year. We got her years ago from another farm with the tag number 318. We tossed around ideas for names that never stuck and she lovingly stayed as โ€œ318โ€ to us, her name if you will.

We were devastated at the loss of 318 but grateful we still had her daughter Zoe with us (pictured with the calf). When Zoe got close to calving this time we both joked โ€œwhat if itโ€™s a heifer and it looks like 318.โ€ And then oddly enoughโ€ฆ thatโ€™s what happened!

She isnโ€™t an exact replica of her grandmother but she sure is close to it. And now as she extends the lineage here on the farm, this calf is lovingly going to carry on the title of โ€œ318.โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

Farming is hard sometimes, but these are the moments that carry us through. The times we can look back at legacies passed down and see lineages of cattle that weโ€™ve raised covering our hillsides. 318 may be gone, but she still with us both in our memories and now in our herdโ€ฆ and for that we are overjoyed.

May today be a day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom as we honor not only our fallen heroes but also stand by their family and friends who have paid the price as well. This is the part of farming that requires deep faith.

Almost all of South Carolina is in a drought, but our area has reached a D3 extreme drought level. These are the levels where we start to see the ground cracking and the dust flying up behind us as we exit the farm.

The seed has been planted and the corn is starting to come up in rows. This will eventually become silage feed for the cattle, but the possibility of it drying up is always in the back of our minds.

As farmers thereโ€™s a lot of times things are simply out of our control, and this is one of them. We do our part, we plant the seed with hopes of the future, and then we wait and pray for the rain to come.

No matter the circumstance, God WILL provide for us in the end, but these are the moments Heโ€™s using to refine our faith. Although the percentage is low, we are holding out hope for the forecasted rain! Praying for our fellow farmers who are also in this season of drought.

This is what community looks like. ๐Ÿ’›

Sweet Babe had her calf, but Jason noticed she was still struggling. He quickly realized she had another still born twin inside her that was hung up on her pelvic bone and wasnโ€™t coming out. The calf was also breeched, making it an extremely difficult situation to get the calf out.

Jason placed a few phone calls and without hesitation 3 separate men stepped in to help (not pictured was also our neighbor who came to help). They all felt the same urgency and desperation we did to help this cow, even though her life had no impact on theirs. They spent hours working to save her.

These are the stories that PETA and animal rights activists donโ€™t want you to hear. The ones that contain the truth that farmers do in fact see more than a dollar sign in our animals. She has a name and a purpose on our farm, but she is also a life that God has entrusted us to care for.

-Proverbs 12:10a

She will more than likely be retired after this, depending on how well she heals. For those of you who know Babe, you know her as the cow that we often let wander the farm to do her own thing. Our โ€œspoiled cowโ€ as we call her. Her retirement will be living her days out grazing on our pastures as we are so grateful for her service to the farm. We covet your prayers in her healing journey! โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

We are extremely grateful for our community who care for our farm, our animals and ultimately us so very well. There have been many times when so many of you have stepped in to help, to support and even to pray over us and for that we are so very thankful! We are who we are because of you. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ

๐ŸŒฑ๐—š๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ฆ๐—ฆ-๐—™๐—˜๐——? ๐ŸŒฑ

Last week was chopping time here on the farm for the rye grass which will be fermented and turned into silage for the cows. One of the questions we often get is: Are our cows grass-fed?

The simple answer? ๐—ฌ๐—˜๐—ฆ! ๐ŸŒพ
We raise our cows on grass pastures 24/7, 365 days a year. Weโ€™re blessed to be in a warm climate down here in South Carolina that allows us to have our cows completely out on pasture all year long. In the Spring/Summer we allow the native grasses to grow and in the Fall/Winter we plant rye grass in our pastures to be able to allow year-round grazing. Currently we have a mixture of rye, native grasses and clover coming up.

Now for the more in-depth answer. Do our cows consume other things in their diet? Another yes! We feed what we call a TMR feed which is a โ€œtotal mixed ration.โ€ As the weather and grasses change along with things like droughts, our cows require a different diet. This often times contains things like corn silage (non-GMO and grown on the farm), organic sunflower hulls/meal, alfalfa hay, minerals, etc.

Because we feed other things in their diet, we are not considered a โ€œ100% grass-fed farm.โ€ Unfortunately there are farms who use the term โ€œgrass-fedโ€ to mislead consumers into believing they are only grass-fed by excluding the โ€œ100%โ€ part (a popular butter brand uses this same tactic). And because the gap from farm-to-table is much wider these days, consumers are then misled into believing a false narrative on how the cows are being raised. On the flip side, while we donโ€™t claim to be โ€œ100% grass-fed,โ€ please know that a LARGE portion of our girlโ€™s diet comes from fresh grass that they graze on year-round, as well as hay. Feeding a TMR diet allows us to be able to regulate the cowsโ€™ nutrition and provide a quality product that is well balanced.

So take heart in knowing that the milk we produce comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed cows that are happy and thriving! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ„

Meet Diesel ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

Definitely head honcho here on the farm. He protects our ladies so well! Like clockwork around 1 am you can hear him bellowing as he roams the pastures, sending warning sounds to any predator that dares to cross his fencelines.

While our herd is made up of a mixture of breeds, youโ€™ll notice we have a large majority of black and white cattle (Holsteins). Diesel here is a Guernsey bull and an attempt to throw a little more red into the herd. We do hope to see offspring with his genetics since heโ€™s such a handsome fella!

Weโ€™ve raised Diesel since he was a calf and itโ€™s so endearing to look back over the lineages that are born and raised right here on our farm. What a blessing to be chosen to care for these creatures. ๐Ÿ’›

Weโ€™re grateful for stores like Mile Creek Farm Market & General Store and others who help us bring our milk to so many of you across the state. And of course in turn weโ€™re also so grateful for all of you who not only support our farm, but support your local stores in the process! ๐Ÿ’›
