This is Dolly ๐Ÿ’•

And yes, sheโ€™s named after the late โ€œQueen of Country,โ€ Mrs. Dolly Parton herself.

Like Mrs. Parton, Dolly is an icon around here. She was given the name due to being known for having rather large udders after calving. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ Her personality is larger than life with such a gentle soul, which makes her an excellent namesake.

The world lost a legend today, but we are honored to still carry her name here on the farm. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน Youโ€™ve got big shoes to fill Dolly!

Welcome to the farm Ruby & Lexi!

These two sweet girls are our newest additions to the farm and are doing surprisingly well despite being born in the middle of this heat wave. ๐Ÿฅต

Ruby (left) is a Guernsey/Jersey cross and Lexi (right) is a Guernsey/Holstein cross. Itโ€™s always such a sigh of relief when calving goes well and both mama and baby are healthy! Raising generations to fill our hillsides has been one of the most rewarding aspects of farming and in the midst of chaos itโ€™s the nudge that gently reminds us: โ€œKEEP GOING.โ€ ๐Ÿ’•

This is the time of year when the w**ds are out of control and our arch nemesis pig w**d is growing what feels like over a foot a day. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ So instead of spraying our pastures, we choose to bush hog them off.

Hereโ€™s a few of the benefits of bush hogging w**ds off the pastures:

โ€ข ๐™Ž๐™ช๐™ฅ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™š๐™จ ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™ซ๐™–๐™จ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š ๐™’๐™š๐™š๐™™๐™จ: Cutting down broadleaf w**ds, briars, and saplings before they go to seed disrupts their reproductive cycle. This prevents them from choking out desirable grasses like Fescue, Clover, and Bermuda.

Tall, dense vegetation creates a damp, shaded microclimate ideal for internal livestock parasites and worms. Mowing exposes the soil surface to sunlight and wind, drying out manure and killing off parasite larvae.

Knocking back a thick, overgrown canopy allows sunlight to reach the lower-growing forage grass tillers. It also clears space so that fertilizing manure can reach the soil directly.

The heavy-duty blades mulch the cut vegetation on-site. As this chopped organic material decomposes, it adds moisture-retaining organic matter and nitrogen back into the topsoil.

So next time you grab a glass of Hensley Farms raw milk, just know a lot of care goes into not only our cows but also the land they graze on as well! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ„

SO INCREDIBLY THANKFUL FOR THE RAIN! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Weโ€™ve been blessed that our summer hasnโ€™t been the normal droughts we get this time of year. However, with the current temperatures reaching 100ยฐ, our cows have been so hot and uncomfortable and our crops were starting to roll up from the sun baking them.

โ€ฆBUT GOD ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

This evening rain is just what weโ€™ve been praying for. The weather radars showed the storms dancing all around us but we remained the tiny dot in the middle with no rain. And yet God reminded us to put our faith in Him and not the radars.

The cows are now grazing the wet grass and the crops are coming back to lifeโ€ฆ and Jehovah Jirah has provided for our weary hearts yet again. ๐ŸŒพ

Today we lost an essential part of the farm. ๐Ÿ’”

If you have been to the farm, you more than likely have had a visit from our old farm dog Roscoe. He never met a stranger and would hobble his way on over to see if you had a treat to give him.

For those of you who donโ€™t know Roscoeโ€™s story: He was a rescue that had been found as a puppy wandering with his his brother, and both puppies had their ears cut off (not cropped, cut straight off to the base). This was more than likely a โ€œbait dogโ€ situation. I wonโ€™t go into that because it turns my stomach and I will never be able to understand the mind of the monsters that unfortunately still walk among us.

And yet despite what he went through, he still loved so fiercely. He was such a happy dog who spent many years as my protector. He LOVED to run around the farm and for quite some time he even refused to come in the house because he was much more in his element wandering and watching over the farm. If there was a puddle, creek or lake, he was in it!

There is a giant sized hole in our hearts right now as we mourn his loss. We donโ€™t always understand things this side of heaven, but we are so grateful for the time we got to share with him here on this earth and we celebrate the fact that he lived a long one.

We miss you so much Roscoe. Forever our โ€œold man.โ€ โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Last night we had a crazy storm blow in.

It was one of those summer storms that seems to almost pop up out of nowhere with really intense lightning, pouring rain and howling winds. The kind that tornadoes tend to spawn from. As you can see, some of the silage corn took a hit from the storm as a result. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Butโ€ฆ hereโ€™s the thingโ€ฆ the remaining corn also desperately needed the rain as it was quickly beginning to dry up from the intense sun/heat weโ€™ve had recently. Part of the field may have been blown over, but the rest of it is thriving again after soaking in the much needed moisture!

And that my friends is what farming is like.

Itโ€™s continuously praying for rain, but also holding your breath when the winds blow it in.
Itโ€™s losing your favorite cow, then watching a new one be born.
Itโ€™s planting a seed that youโ€™re never guaranteed to see grow.

Farming isnโ€™t for the weak, but let me tell youโ€ฆ there is something so beautiful about being so dependent on God and watching Him show up every single time.

This corn will be salvaged and the remaining corn now has moisture to push it through until harvest. Is it frustrating? Sure. But we are still so blessed and God is still so good. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Happy Independence Day from all of us here at Hensley Farms!

We are so honored to be able to farm this land in one of the greatest countries on earth. Land that was fought over and won through the brave service of men and women who laid their life on the line for our freedom. ๐Ÿซก

Our prayer is that as a nation we continue to seek the will of the Father. To be set apart as a nation, holy and united.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Raw Milk Drop Off ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Roger will still be delivering milk tomorrow to Inman, so donโ€™t forget to grab a gallon or two of Hensley Farms raw milk.

What a better way to celebrate the 4th than to have a glass of milk produced right here on American soil and support your local farmers!โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™

A very special edition to our farm. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Meet the newest little member of our herd. A healthy heifer calf born a few days ago, but her story is so precious to us!

The very last photo is of our beloved 318, who we unfortunately lost to old age last year. We got her years ago from another farm with the tag number 318. We tossed around ideas for names that never stuck and she lovingly stayed as โ€œ318โ€ to us, her name if you will.

We were devastated at the loss of 318 but grateful we still had her daughter Zoe with us (pictured with the calf). When Zoe got close to calving this time we both joked โ€œwhat if itโ€™s a heifer and it looks like 318.โ€ And then oddly enoughโ€ฆ thatโ€™s what happened!

She isnโ€™t an exact replica of her grandmother but she sure is close to it. And now as she extends the lineage here on the farm, this calf is lovingly going to carry on the title of โ€œ318.โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

Farming is hard sometimes, but these are the moments that carry us through. The times we can look back at legacies passed down and see lineages of cattle that weโ€™ve raised covering our hillsides. 318 may be gone, but she still with us both in our memories and now in our herdโ€ฆ and for that we are overjoyed.

Here in the U.S. June 1st marks the beginning of National Dairy Month, which actually began as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote the consumption of milk and has now developed into an annual tradition that honors the dairy industry.
