We're happy to be hosting a winter shed talk showing some of the work Kevin has done on our GPS and Automated Equipment. Farmers and others in the community interested are welcome to attend! Description of the topic 👇👇🐮🚜

Cheap RTK Guidance Without a Subscription: Reality or Rabbit Hole?

Kevin Zwieg will share his experiences installing and operating two sub-inch-accurate GPS guidance systems, including auto steer, auto turn, and swath control, based on the open-source software project AgOpenGPS, developed and used by farmers worldwide. The discussion will cover the upsides and downsides, comparisons with commercially available systems, and a deeper look at how RTK and GPS guidance systems work.

Happy New Year!

A new year a new spot for Karl. He has moved out of his hut (crib) and into the heifer barn (preschool). We are well aware that Karl is not a heifer. It has been a long time since we have had a steer on the farm but it looks like Karl will be here for a while.

Him and Olive still love eachother very much! Lisa and I are still his favorite humans. I am curious to see how his personality develops as he keeps graduating.

An accident happened to a local farmer last week.

They were headed to the grain elevator with a wagon of corn. Traveling at 30 miles per hour a person rearended the wagon going over double the wagons speed.

Fortunately everyone involved was not seriously injured.

This is my personal reminder to everyone that farmers are very busy right now with harvest. And we ask you to be patient with us as we try to get our crops off the field.

Make sure that when you pass you can see it is clear. Don't pass on a bridge. If a large piece of equipment is in the oncoming lane move over. Watch for our blinkers. We might be slowing down to turn left as you are passing on the left. Put your screens down and pay attention to what's in front of you.

We truly want to be able to get our crops off our fields and make sure everyone makes it home to their families safely.

Happy due date yesterday Karl!

In honor of Karl officially making it passed his due date, I thought I would post an old video of his first time walking on grass. He was almost a week old in this video.

Bitsy and Karl update!

Bitsy is growing great. She is finally bigger than a new born. Her eating habits are good and she remains healthy.

I wish Karl's was as easy to update but he was born so much earlier and smaller. Karl developed an upper respiratory infection which turned into pneumonia and had scours among all of that. I am happy to say that he has made a full recovery. The vet said that his lungs are still under developed but we are hopeful that with time they will fully develope. He continues to grow. We still feed him 3x a day. We are hoping some time after his due date we can go to the normal 2x a day. He eats all of the pellets we give him and continues to love the dog.

I have had so many cow post I have been neglecting the whole other part of what we do...HARVEST!

We have been soybean harvesting for 8 days now. The beautiful weather has meant some very full days but we are greatful to be able to keep going.

I had the privilege to try, key word being try, unloading on the go. That is where I the grain cart driver pulls alongside Kyle Zwieg the combine operator and he unloads while we are both moving. And while that is all happening I have both Kyle telling me to stay closer and my 8 y/o telling me to go faster or slower.

For the most part Kyle does the combining, Joe does the grain cart hauling, I unload the loads and take care of the cows, Kevin plants winter wheat, and Lisa takes care of the calves.

If you saw the video you know a little about our calf born 38 days early. I thought I would share some photos of Karl from his first week.

1. The first picture of Karl. He could barely hold his head up. We would have to position him to get a good angle to feed him.
2. His first time standing. He was so wobbly. It only lasted 15-20 seconds but we would take any progress.
3. His first time outside. Him and Olive loved exploring eachother.
4. Theodore loving on Karl after school. He discovered that Karl loves in-between his legs petted.
5. Karl drinking a full 1/3 bottle of milk like a champ.
6. Landon snuggling Karl on his last night in the "NICU". Landon had a break down that night because he never wanted Karl to get bigger. Now he knows how we feel about him getting older.
7. Karl and I enjoying this beautiful fall.
8. Karl's first time in the huts.
9. Olive and Karl getting some excersise.

You will notice that Karl started in a small bedding cart. Then he moved into a bigger bedding cart as he learned to stand. Finally he made his way to the huts when he was drinking regularly. Plus the equipment room was getting a little too hot for him during the day.

This is Karl's story!

My audio is a little less than desired but I couldn't bring myself to not share the video portion.

Edits: 1. He drank a full bottles worth in one day. Not a full bottle all at once.
2. We did put him on Baytril, an antibiotic, on Friday to make sure he didn't get an infection if he developed a leaky gut.
3. We moved him into the huts on Sunday
4. He was completely winded after all that running around

I will share more pictures and updates as he grows.
