National Mint Julep Day

The is a classic, bourbon-based Southern cocktail featuring simple syrup, crushed ice and fresh mint.

Originally consumed for medicinal purposes, it is now world-famous as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.

In the late 1700s, the word “julep” referred to a syrupy drink used to mask the taste of medicine. It was frequently prescribed to treat upset stomachs and soothe aching throats.

When the drink was first recorded in print in 1803, it was originally mixed with brandy, gin, or rum. It wasn’t until bourbon production flourished in Kentucky that it officially became the spirit of choice.
