Bright, cheerful, reliable. Daffodils are just want we need in an spring flower. Yesterday in the perennial beds I saw the first few of them poking their little green noses into the world after their long winter nap.

The past couple is windy evening I’ve been pinning down tarps and chasing errant pieces of row cover while my boots sink deep in the mud. It isn’t always so much. Nor is it always as serene as these pictures. It’s a little bit of everything.

The art of braiding garlic has a history that is centuries old. I’ll be sharing my way of crafting garlic braids this Sunday, November 19 and again December 16 Maine Organic Marketplace in Freeport.

The braiding of garlic originated in Italy and Greece as a way of storing the crop after harvest. Garlic was believed to ward off evil spirits so braids were also hung over the beds of sick or children. It’s a craft that takes a great deal of attentiveness while creating. When complete braids are both a connection with old ways and our future nourishment in your kitchen for the season to come.

If you’re interested sharing this tradition and craft with me you can sign up at mofga.com on the events page.

I spend a good deal of time dreaming about filling the fields with flowers. It is indeed most of what I plan for through the winter. I am try to not wish away the other times of the year. I am started to really appreciate the slower pace of this time of year. When much of my time is spend pressing seeds into soil and tending for seedlings that fit nicely on a few greenhouse tables. Things are still manageble and tidy. Soon they'll fill the field and start to feel less tidy. But I appreciate it all, the whole cycle of growing.

About Us

Flywhweel Flowers was started in 2017 by me, Carole Mapes. After a few years of growing flowers as my side gig I decided to go full time and start my own farm. As the farmer-in-residence at MOFGA the first season was a success! So we’re back for more. I’m joined by my sister, Lauren our two dogs Gus and Frank and a boisterous flock of laying hens. Flywheel Flowers are available in the Bangor and Belfast area as part of our flower share CSA, at Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor Farmers’ Markets and for special orders for weddings and events. Lauren manages the dried flower side of the business. The third weekend in September after Labor Day we set-up camp at the Rose Gate Farmer’s Market with a variety of dried flower creations.
