How it started -> how it’s going…. We started our bee keeping journey somewhat on a whim in 2023. Each year we’ve seemed to expand a bit, and 2026 is no exception. Today we split three hives that successfully made it through our Wisconsin weather, into six hives! This will need to be our last expansion given our limited space in our residential yard, but no doubt a successful year will allow us to offer a bunch more honey later this year!!

It’s the heart of winter Brie’s Bees update! Winter is hard on bees for obvious reasons, but they are fully capable of survival in Wisconsin, even with our -20 degree days! To help them, just a few times a winter, we provide some extra eats for them. Know as pollen patties, these super sticky sheets are filled with pollen and sugar to help provide extra proteins (what the pollen provides bees) and carbs.

I’m excited with what I found today, 3 of our 4 hives had bee activity upon opening them! We are clearly not out of the winter yet, so fingers crossed the bee populations deep inside each hive are still strong and they are keeping our queens nice and warm!

We have a very limited supply of honey remaining, so feel free to reach out if you are in need!

And thats a wrap for the 2025 season! This weekend we finished winter preparations on all four of our hives. This included placing "moisture boxes" in the top position, which helps prevent moisture from dropping down into the hive, while at the same time allows us to provide supplemental food throughout winter through a little trap door (second picture). Each hive was given a pollen patty. We then wrap the hives with insulating bubble wrap to give just a bit of help against the cold temperatures and wind.

Reflecting back, the season started with having a single hive survive the 2024 winter. We were able to take that single hive and turn it into three in early spring, adding the forth buy buying one hive worth. This was our best season so far in our few short years as beekeepers. We harvested well over 200 pounds of honey from our amazing ladies.

Don't BEE Afraid! 🐝One of the most common responses or comments I get when I talk about being a beekeeper, is that the individual is afraid of bees, or their spouse or child is. Do honeybees sting? Yes, I was just stung on Monday WHILE BEEKEEPING! Beekeeping comes with the inherent risk of getting stung, it is inevitable to get a few stings each year when working inside their home.

But do you know what I was doing just days before? Gardening near flowering plants with honeybees just inches from my face. The honeybee is such a kind and gentle insect, and will only sting when she or her hive is threatened (the males do not have stingers!). So unless you are a beekeeper, happen to have the terrible luck of stepping on a bee that may be on your lawn with your bare feet, or swat at one not realizing what she is, you have virtually 0% chance of being stung by a honeybee! Have you been stung recently while just seemingly living your life? You were stung by a wasp or hornet. Those creatures are pure evil!
