The honey super frames were such a success, I decided to try the same thing with the newest nuc. 🐝

This colony has been moving a lot slower than expected and hasn’t even drawn out half a frame of new comb in two weeks, despite being fed sugar water. Today I added four freshly waxed deep frames to see if a little extra encouragement helps get things moving.

Sometimes beekeeping is science, sometimes it’s experimentation, and sometimes it’s just crossing your fingers and asking the bees for their opinion. 🀞🏼🐝

Loaded down with nectar and bright orange pollen, this forager needed three tries to stick the landing.

Honeybees can carry loads approaching their own body weight, which makes these not so graceful arrivals a little easier to understand. 🧑🐝🍯

Well, I’d call that a success. 😁🐝

Last week I installed 9 freshly waxed honey super frames.

Today, every single frame has drawn comb, and one already has capped honey! 🍯✨

The bees clearly approved of the fresh wax coating and got right to work turning nectar into honey.

It’s always exciting to see preparation pay off this quickly. πŸ’›

A little nectar transfer happening right on the front porch of the hive. 🐝🍯

A forager bee passes fresh nectar to a house bee, who then carries it deeper into the hive for processing and storage.

Every drop of honey begins with thousands of tiny interactions like this. 🍯

Spent part of the day waxing frames for the honey supers. 🐝✨

A little messy, a little time consuming, but giving the bees a fresh coat of wax helps encourage the them to start drawing comb sooner and get right to work storing nectar. 🍯

A lot of beekeeping happens long before the honey ever makes it to the jar. πŸ’›

The new bee boots made their apiary debut today. 😊🐝✨

The hive update itself was a little less exciting. Found the queen, which is always a relief. Interestingly though, still no new comb building yet despite feeding. The colony is pretty small, so they may just not be ready to expand yet. A good reminder that bees move at their own pace, not ours. πŸ˜… It’s always interesting to see how differently each colony develops.

Happy World Bee Day. 🌎🐝

A day to recognize the quiet, essential work happening all around us, and a reminder that protecting bees means protecting so much more than honey. 🍯

Pollinators support healthy ecosystems, biodiversity, and a large portion of the food we rely on every day. Their work touches almost every part of life around us, often without us even noticing. 🌎🌼

Today is about awareness, education, and protecting the tiny creatures helping keep the world in bloom. πŸπŸ’›

The entrance of a hive is never just random movement. 🐝

Caught the bees washboarding today. This rhythmic rocking and scrubbing behavior is still somewhat of a mystery to beekeepers, but it’s most often seen in strong, healthy colonies.

Subtle behaviors like this can be easy to miss in a newer colony, which made it even more exciting to spot only two weeks after installation. 🐝

Moments like this are a reminder that honeybees are still full of mysteries, and we’re always learning something new from the hive. 🐝✨

The apiary continues to grow. 🐝✨

Rob came by yesterday to drop off another nuc, and it’s hard not to pause and appreciate how quickly this little dream is taking root. Grateful for every lesson, every bee, and every small step forward. πŸ’›

Every hive brings its own rhythm and personality, and I’m excited to watch this one grow. 🍯🐝✨

Congratulations it’s a boy! πŸ’™πŸ
Unlike worker bees, drones are the only males in the hive and their primary role is mating with a queen.
