The Movement

The founding father of the Slow Food Movement, Carlo Petrini, recognized in 1986 that the industrialization of food was standardizing taste and leading to the annihilation of thousands of food varieties and flavors. Concerned that the world was quickly reaching a point of no return, he wanted to reach out to consumers and demonstrate to them that they have choices over fast food and

supermarket homogenization. He rallied his friends and began to speak out at every available opportunity and soon the movement was born and Slow Food was created. Today the organization is active in 45 countries and has a worldwide membership of over 85,000. People have responded to the growing movement, because they have become tired of buying the same things, eating the same foods and living the same lives. With these interests in mind, our mission is to create a robust, active movement that protects taste, culture and the environment as universal social values. Slow Food programs are dedicated to the mingling of taste, culture and the environment.

Nutrition can feel overwhelming—between food labels, trending diets, and conflicting headlines, it’s hard to know what to trust. That’s where Amanda & Max come in.

Both registered dietitians and Slow Food board members, they’ll lead a breakout session where you can ask your questions, explore the gray areas, and get grounded, thoughtful answers.

Topics may include:
– What food labels really mean
– Controversial ingredients + common misconceptions
– Practical strategies for eating well without stress

MJ is our farmers market queen 👑 (shoutout to ) and a community builder at heart. She serves as the Snail of Approval Committee Chair for Slow Food First Coast and has a deep love for local food systems and the people behind them.

Her breakout session is all about the magic of farmers markets—not just shopping, but connecting:
🧑‍🌾 With the folks who grow your food
🥕 With the seasons
🤝 And with your community

Come swap market stories, share what you love, and talk about how we can all build better food connections in our neighborhoods.

Fresh, Local & In-Season 🍓

Prissy is our incoming Director of Membership and a true powerhouse in Florida Agriculture. With over a decade of experience in soil science, crop production, and community education, she’s the perfect one to call when you need to know what’s growing - and how not to kill it!

At her breakout session, “What’s In Season in North Florida”, Prissy will share insights on seasonal eating in our region - how to better understand what’s growing around you, why it matters, and how it connects to everything from flavor to sustainability (one of the key pillars of the Slow Food movement)!!

Join us at our upcoming Annual Membership meeting! Members and non-members are welcome :)
