Happy 110th Birthday US Marine Corps Reserve!🎂

The Marine Forces Reserve (also known as the United States Marine Corps Reserve or the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve) was created in 1916, in conjunction with the creation of the Navy Reserve.

The Marine Corps Reserve is currently the largest command in the United States Marine Corps, with approximately 40,000 Reserve Marines and 184 Reserve Training Centers located throughout the United States.

The mission of the Marine Corps Reserve is to augment and reinforce active Marine forces in times of war, national emergency or contingency operations, provide personnel and operational tempo relief for the active forces in peacetime, and provide service to the community (such as through Toys for Tots around Christmas time).

The United States Marine Corps Reserve was established when Congress passed the Naval Appropriations Act of 29 August 1916 and is responsible for providing trained units and qualified individuals to be mobilized to carry out these duties.

The Marine Corps Reserves is comprised of two groups of Marines and Sailors: the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and the Individual Ready Reserve.

The first group are Marines who belong to reserve units and attend drill one weekend a month and a two-week training each year, typically during the summer months.

The Individual Ready reserve is composed of Marines who have finished their active duty or Selected Marine Corps Reserve obligations, however, their names remain on record and they may be called up in case of war or another emergency.

August’s FULL MOON was traditionally called the STURGeon MOON because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

Other names for this Full Moon include ”Full Green CORN Moon,” signaling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest, “WHEAT Cut Moon,” “Moon When All Things RIPEN,” and ”BLUEberry Moon.”

Flying Up Moon is a Cree term describing the time when young birds are finally ready to take the leap and learn to fly.

Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe), Harvest Moon (Dakota), and Ricing Moon (Anishinaabe) signify that this is the time to gather maturing crops.

Along the same vein, the Assiniboine people named this period Black Cherries Moon, referring to when chokecherries become ripe.
The Tlingit people of the Pacific Northwest traditionally called this time of the season the Mountain Shadows Moon.

National Park Service Day!

Happy 110th Birthday! 🎂

President Woodrow Wilson and the US Congress signed the National Park Service (NPS) Organic Act and it passed into law on August 25, 1916.

The NPS manages our country’s national parks.

NPS celebrates its birthday by hosting an entrance-free day each year for all visitors to explore their lands!

If you are out-and-about today, try to stop at one of the National Parks - there are 3 local to us in northeast Florida!

But check to see if they are OPEN first!

Take a HIKE or a WALK then stop by VU🍺and discuss the day's outing over a VU🍺PINT!
