They also help keep the hens out of the gardens.

We’ve had a couple firsts this week.

First time plum jam with cinnamon.

First time castrating piglets. We helped out over at Liza’s Farm and learned some things.

‘Twas a very nicest little first harvest (with a weird cucumber 😆) but it’s a start. We also picked about two five gallon buckets of plums today.

It was a beautiful evening outside after work. Clarence and one of the hens hopped on my lap for a visit while Rollo and the other birds went about the yard.

Surprise of the day? The grapevines came back! We thought the goats were the end of them, so we were super excited to see them thriving!

I love that the amberlinks colors all are unique.

The chicory is flowering 🤩 the roots are great roasted and ground and added to coffee grounds. If you’re Cajun, you already knew! The plant is right at five feet tall.

We started harvesting the plums. We filled a five gallon bucket in a few minutes.

Friends, if you’re in the Onslow, Jones, Craven or Duplin County areas, and want to process chickens, this is for you.

We rented the Mobile Processing Unit again from the Jones County Ag Extension. It’s the best $25 you can spend. You book online, pay cash at pickup and sign the lease, hook up the prepacked trailer then you’re on your way! Multiple sizes of kill cones, a scalder, and a plucker are included. They even throw in a dolly, the scalder is heavy!

Kill cones are the most human way to kill poultry. The spinal cord remains intact, and the heart continues to beat while gravity simultaneously helps bleed the bird out.

The scalder loosens the feathers for the plucker.

The plucker saves you LOTS of time. It’s not perfect but pretty darn close!

You need to have: sharp knives, a table, cooler with ice bath, a drinking hose (available in the camping section of Walmart), propane and electricity, and a receptacle for the bits and pieces. We lined the basins under the kill comes with 30 gallon trash bags. This made cleanup so easy!

Here are a few photos. We did 14 birds today. Oh, and our storefront Northwoods Urban Farm is now allowed to sell our poultry, that we raised and processed, to the public!

First echinacea of the year! The chickens love to hang out under the shade of echinacea and bee balm. It won’t be long before there are flowers everywhere. The bees will be super happy. I’m thinking of moving the chicory to this area also.

The bees bringing in pollen. Probably from Magnolia flowers since they are blooming right now.
