Clean up crew! When we open boxes, often times there is cross comb drawn between the hive bodies. This is a “bridge” that the bees have built to get seamlessly from a frame to the one above or below it. This time of year there is usually honey stored in the bridge comb (in spring they usually raise drones here). The girls quickly clean it up so the at none goes to waste and then store it right back in those cells once we close the box back up. Pretty cool!

Meagan is always on the lookout for our next breeder hives. 🐝

Throughout the year, we’re watching for the colonies that stand out—the ones that stay strong, produce well, maintain good brood patterns, and are a pleasure to work.

Those hives are the genetics we want to keep moving forward. By selecting our breeders from the best-performing colonies in our own apiaries, year after year, we’re continually keeping the bees that are best suited for our operation here in East Texas.

Good genetics don’t start in the spring when it’s time to raise queens. We’re looking for them all year long. 🐝

Maybe these bees will make their own hot honey?! 😜 It’s always fun to see the fun ways folks decorate their ranches. These girls have a fun view 🌶️🐝

Most years we try to take a photo of the first frame of honey we harvest to remember the moment. In 2023 apparently all my photos were of the forklift 🤣 it’s always fun to look back and see how we grown!

Sweet Emily doesn’t care that there are huge pastures of grass, she likes her morning treats!🐴

A little peek inside the bees’ pantry 🍯🐝

Once honey is stored in the comb, the bees seal the cells with a thin layer of beeswax called cappings. Think of it like putting a lid on the jar — it helps protect the honey they’ve worked so hard to make and keeps it stored away until the colony needs it.

If you would have told me a decade ago that I’d be so excited about getting a new shipping container I would have looked at you like you had two heads 😂 Thankful we can have more storage and this single use sure is shiny and new looking!!

The other two wish they were this pretty 😏

Even the bamboo floor was shiny! Could see every footprint of the guys who inspected it before they delivered. 🙌🏼

Taking care of the bees isn’t glamorous, especially during the East Texas summer, but it’s the part of the job that matters most

These spring blooms are just a memory now. 🌸 Summer has settled into East Texas & the fields are turning golden as everything is drying up 🌾 …which is a romantic way to say we are all roasting on the surface of the sun as we work our hives 😜😂
