September 2026 Business of the Month
The Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Highland Manor W**ery on being chosen as the September Business of the Month!
We asked Rhonda Moody, Co-owner, what they would like to share with everyone and this is what she said:
Highland Manor W**ery has been part of Fentress County since 1980 and is proud to hold the distinction of being Tennessee's Oldest W**ery. The w**ery was founded by Fay Wheeler, a Jamestown native who was instrumental in helping bring commercial w**emaking back to Tennessee after Prohibition. Highland Manor became Tennessee's first licensed w**ery and processed the state's first modern commercial grape crush in 1980. What started here in Fentress County helped pave the way for the Tennessee w**e industry we know today.
Over the years, Highland Manor changed hands a few times, but the w**e kept flowing. Gertie and Butch Campbell operated the w**ery for 17 years before Fred and Rhonda Moody purchased it in 2016. Fred is Gertie's nephew, so keeping the w**ery in the family and continuing what had already been built here was especially important to us.
A lot has changed since 1980, but a lot hasn't. We still make and bottle our w**es right here on the property. We still welcome people through the same doors to taste w**e, visit the cellar and learn a little about how it is made. And we are still incredibly proud when someone walks in and tells us they visited Highland Manor 10, 20 or even 30 years ago and wanted to come back.
In 2019, we added Sawbriar Brewing Company to the property. What began as a way to offer something for the "non-w**e drinker" has grown into a big part of what we do, with craft b**r, food, live music and events throughout the year. Together, the w**ery and brewery have given us the opportunity to welcome thousands of visitors to Fentress County while also creating a place for our local community to gather.
We are incredibly grateful to the customers who have supported Highland Manor through the generations, to our employees who keep everything going, and to our community for continuing to support a locally owned small business.
