“Why are the horses so fuzzy? It’s not even cold yet!” 🐴🍂

That’s a question I get from clients this time of year—and the answer might surprise you! 😮

🌞Daylight is the main seasonal cue for growing and shedding a horse’s coat. The changing length of the days affects hormone signals that help regulate that hair-growth cycle.

As the days shorten, horses begin developing their thicker winter coats—even if we’re still enjoying warm afternoons. When the days lengthen again, those changing signals help prompt shedding and the transition to a lighter summer coat.

🌡That’s why your horse’s wardrobe doesn’t always match the temperature outside! Individual horses can look different depending on their breed, age, health, and exposure to artificial lighting.

How’s the winter wardrobe coming along at your barn: a little fuzzy or full teddy bear? 🧸

We love fall at the barn—the crisp air, colorful leaves, and fuzzy coats. But it also keeps every rider in a state of heightened preparedness…because behind every beautiful autumn moment is the possibility of…

anything could happen. 🍂🐴

Fall brings an impressive number of spook-tacular possibilities: blowing leaves, crunching leaves, flapping bags, suspicious shadows, rogue pumpkins…and objects that were perfectly acceptable yesterday.

What is the most ridiculous thing your horse has ever spooked at?

Tell us in the comments—we could all use the laugh. 😂

Fall chilly mornings, and suddenly turnout becomes an extreme sport. 🍂😂

The horses are feeling the cooler temperatures, the lead ropes are taut, and apparently we’re flying kites now.

It’s officially Horse Kite Season.

Anyone else have a horse who’s feeling a little extra fresh and sassy this week?
