Loma Verde Farms

Loma Verde Farms Avocado & Fruit Farm Loma Verde Farms is located in Jamul, CA. We are a small avocado farm with only 200+ avocado trees.

We're members of the California Avocado Commission & are very proud to be avocado growers. We've planted a number of fruit trees since we purchased the property in 2007 & began making jams & jellies in 2010. We've even dabbled in making loquat wine & plum brandy & have talked about planting some grapes here one day. We are not "organic" but pride ourselves in not using pesticides on our trees or i

n our garden. We've even started giving our dead avocado branches a "2nd life" by creating & selling "branch plants & candles" at local farmers markets & street fairs. Here's hoping you'll be seeing our logo somewhere near you soon!

There's a number of ideas on how to keep your 🥑 from turning brown if left in the refrigerator. I've been using the plastic wrap on top of my guacamole, getting rid of most of the air bubbles, and I've been really happy how long it lasts in the refrigerator.
Today I'm going to compare my idea, on the left, and an idea where you put water on top, on the right. Guess there's no way for the air to get to the mashed avocados & you just pour the water off when you're ready to use it. It doesn't get soggy since the oils in the avocado repells the water. I'll give this experiment a few days & let you know how it went.

Had seen a chef put avocado halves in boiling water for 10 seconds, then into ice water, & then they just slide right out of their outer skins. 👎
Nope, didn't work for me anyway..

Just today, a friend of mine sent me this link, just in case I hadn't tried this ... and I hadn't, but will the next time I have a couple of ripe avocados!! Will let you know, or if you try it sooner, you can let me know if it worked for you.

Well, I'm back! Spring time is the right time for California Avocados. Am anxious to start trying new recipes & start posting fun facts about fruits & vegetables as we build our new garden where our large greenhouse is now.
I'm sure our avocados loved all the rain, but don't think they were very happy with the cloudy & colder days & nights. Am sure it will delay the trees blooming & has probably slowed the growth of this year's fruit.
Will have to take a walk in the orchard to see what this year's avocados are doing.

Having too much fun with my lemon seeds! Sprouted them in a wet paper towel in a zip lock plastic bag, then two weeks later I planted them in a plastic egg carton & even brought them to Sedona with me to make sure they didn't dry out.
Looking forward to see if we actually get some trees for our farm.

Man, we've missed many a season of fruit, building this house, but I really didn't miss all the thought & research I usually do at "fruit season".
We aren't, okay.. I'm not, a dessert or sweets person. I LOVE those mini candy bars they sell during Halloween, because that much "sweet" is as much as I need. Besides Rocky Road Ice Cream & Tapioca Pudding, & maybe chocolate cake with marshmallow icing, I can go months w/o sweets.
Fruit seems to be the seasonal favorite for jams, jellies & desserts. Now after having dozens of jars sitting under our house for years (they don't last forever) I'm in the position of needing to open them up & dump them into my compost pile..How sad is that?
I started to make BBQ sauces, peach salsa, loquat salsa, anything but jam!!
AND, I want the recipes to be quick & easy. STILL haven't found that "throw the whole fruit in the pot, skin & pit, then fish out the pits" recipe I've been dreaming of. Maybe one day...
So, another day of sorting, slicing & pitting our apricots & peaches & figuring out what to do with them next, and mind you, we didn't have THAT many!!
I've made one huge pot of apricot jam, with a ridiculous amount of sugar, froze half slices of peaches, and used one batch for peach ice cream, & am 5 hours away from seeing how my half slices of apricots "dried" in the oven.
I have a pies worth of peeled, pitted, & sliced peaches waiting for my next recipe idea.
One more day & this'll be over for another year. Let's hope I'm more prepared NEXT year!!

It's that time of year!! Actually, it hasn't been for awhile. I thought finally being able to live here at the farm, would make "fruit season" easier, but seems we're busy on the house & once we notice there's fruit on the trees, the critters get it.
We had 3 plum trees (don't know why), but we had crazy plums...Not one plum this year. Don't know if the trees even blossomed or are all dead. We've lost our nectarine & apricot trees, but gained a fruit bearing volunteer apricot tree. We lost our fig tree, but think we now have 4 or 5 volunteers growing in the avocado trees, but since I don't see them, forget to grab the figs.
From the garden's compost, we had about 10 volunteer pomegranate trees sprout up, yes, in the garden. Took out the garden & grabbed all of the pomegranate trees & put them in pots. Gave a few to our neighbor & finally planted the 7 left & actually saw a few flowers this year. The garden? It became our chicken coop & yard & we have 6 hens-a-laying.
The tool shed has become my she-shed with a new addition, a living room 😁
Time to start thinking about harvesting our avocados 🥑, & time for me to work on finding some recipes for our peaches & apricots.
Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!!
Hoping to start posting more farm related news throughout the year, starting today!!

Very disappointed..Have been trying out different ways of freezing avocados the past few years. Some were in bags that I forgot about, so those will be going into my compost. At the end of the California avocado season last year, I grabbed a bunch & tried another couple of ideas I'd found searching the web.
Well, yesterday I decided to pull out a couple to make avocado pesto pasta, by thawing out one & just adding it to my already made homemade pesto. All the time & effort, wasted.
Having to wrap every halfed avocado 🥑 was a pain. As you can see, they still turned brown & tasted about as good as they look (and I even scraped the brown layer off).
Ok, this way was a failure. I'm pretty sure the mash it all up, mix it with lemon juice, and freeze it in a freezer bag worked. Will keep you apprised of my findings.

March is usually the beginning of California avocado season, but after walking the trees with our two youngest grandkids yesterday, I can see we won't be harvesting our avocados again this year because there just doesn't look like we have enough on our trees.
On a good note, March is also a good time to cut back & top off the high branches & prune them to promote new growth. There's much needed w**d wacking & fertilizing to be done as well. Here's to a better harvest next year!

Been awhile since I've posted anything, so thought is was long overdue. A couple of months ago I discovered another volunteer cherry tomato plant, not out under the trees, but right in our exterior snake rock courtyard!! Started giving us tomatoes right away. Gotta love a plant that grows voluntarily & gives you fruit!! Yesterday's harvest!!
