🐂 We are need to move some beef! 🐂

We have limited room to raise steers to butcher weight and it seems everyone (bull and females) in the pastures are all hormonal with calving. The yearling boys say it’s like walking on eggshells at this place right now 🐣🐣🐣 The boys are saying “come save us!”

First we have QSH Stirling (73,532)
07/28/2025

FTA Kate’s Lynn x QSH Samson
When attempting to pick up Kenny for lease, we had another farm tell us they may be interested in purchasing Stirling and asked us to keep him intact so here he is Abby Brend. He is the youngest of the 2025 and seems to be retaining all the hair while the others seem to be slicking out for summer. And honestly a couple of them in the gangly stage!

Then we have Copy, Paste, and Freezer looking for grazing space for the next year or so when they will be at a better weight for the butcher. All are pure bread out of AHCA registered stock.

It was a challenge to get reasonable photos last night so we did what we could on short notice.

That flame thrower from last week isn’t the only thing on 🔥 fire 🔥 around here. Young heard bull FTA Walther turns 3 this summer and is meeting the fruits of his labor from last fall.

QSH Jolene: we came out on Thursday morning (6/4) to free Aurora from the being stuck in the bale feeder to find a freshly born bull calf with Jolene. He shall be called Carl Dean as suggested by coworker Kelli

Beyond Hope Saiorse: Saiorse had been miserable. She must aspire to be a dairy cow or top of her class in milk production because this girl was ready to pop. And girl did she ever! She calved a BEAUTIFUL blue eyed heifer in the early morning hours of 6/9. And this girl is a heartbreaker! We had been waiting for Saiorse to calve and for baby to prove strong so the pair could return to Saiorse’s true home with Maryn Cowell in Minnesota. The pair traveled well and safely and are rejoining Saiorse’s dam and grand dam at Maryn’s new farm ❤️ 4 generations back together ❤️

RW Buttercup, more commonly known as “Momma”: we’ve been on baby watch with Momma for a couple weeks now. According to gestation charts, 6/3 would have been the earliest calving date. But Momma does what Momma wants. Just ask Brent 🤭 She trudged around the place like no other for weeks, soaking up the special attention. We decide to get some sleep on Friday evening and she said “What about me?!?” as she calved a long legged, beautiful black heifer just before midnight on 6/12. We watch Momma close - both her previous boys were breach and required assistance so Brent saying “calf is out” told me we had a heifer 💗

FTA Chardonnay: we’ve had our eye on her but she is a cow that appreciates some space and not a lot of fuss (but loves a good brushing). Sunday morning we loaded to take Saiorse and babe to Minnesota and noticed we hadn’t seen Chardonnay. I successfully climbed through the hot wire 💪🏻 and found her meandering the cut through. Excellent, back to the road. Upon returning home and coming over the ridge in the lane we see a deep red cow seemingly licking something on the ground in the food plot pasture 😳 We had just dropped off the other deep mahogany red cow suggesting this was Chardonnay. Sure enough, with any fuss she had her little boy literally just before we got home home 🩵

And just like that, we have 4 of 9 expected calves. 2 bulls, 2 heifers. Let the babies keep coming!

Before I start in our calving and breeding updates, let me first share the pure joy of Brent Schweer getting his new “burn pile igniter”. Yes, that’s in my house 🔥🔥 Lord save me, my critters, anything Highland/Scotland related, and all the important documents in the house (most importantly my passport)

🐂🚓 Some days I have to remind myself that I’m not the morality police and last few weeks have given me a number of opportunities to practice this. Some more obvious than others; some more infuriating than others 🚓🐂

When I get like that, the best medicine is my cows, good sleep, and a handful of good friends that ground me (and duck tape my mouth and hands before I do much damage). We are set to start calving next week which should be a good distraction!

Momma should be the first to go. She gets first dibs on the mister and the fan; whichever one she wants at any given time. No one challenges the pregnant grumpy herd boss. Everyone is bred to young bull, FTA Walther (Kenny) for this year. He’s coming along nicely and we are happy with the twins he gave us last year (other than the infertility element). This is better than a kid at Christmas!

I also love getting the updates on my herd in Scotland Ar Lèirsinn Highland Cattle I may not get to spend 3 weeks with them this June like I did last June. Nor will I be able to be at the Highland show. But that doesn’t make me any less committed to each and every one of them for the long haul. Burn and flip will never be my style, ladies.

Man I miss that view 🌄

🐂 How do you know you are breeding good stock? 🐂

Repeat buyers that drive 16 hours one way (South Carolina to Iowa) intending to pick up 2 heifers and spontaneously deciding they need freemartin Jules as well! 🥰

Shawn and Jennifer Rambo from Lil Bit of Rambo Farm Life reserved QSH Millie and QSH Maryn’s Siobhan back in December. The distance and weather held the girls with us until last night. When Jennifer met freemartin QSH Jules, her heart melted and Jules had to get on the trailer too. These 3 will be joining QSH Miss Dolly Parton down south.

I may not breed high numbers each year. I may not breed show winners (or enter many shows). But I do stand proud of how far I’ve come, how much I’ve learned, and the relationships I’ve built 💪🏻

You’ll have an amazing life girls. I’ll be down to visit soon. Behavior yourselves and keep making me proud! 😘

One of my favorite days of the year is opening up “food plot”. Fat and happy cattle make me happy. And an adult beverage while watching them doesn’t hurt on a Friday evening 🐂

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐂 The girls in Scotland coming down off the hill for evening grain. This is a sighting I never get tired of seeing. Megan is 18 and so stable on her feet - I love that ol’ girl! And the calves catching up with their little side kick 🐂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ruri MacDougall; it still doesn’t let me tag Heather, the amazing photographer and keeper 🎥❤️

Two lots of his semen sell on Saturday, 3/21/26 on the North Central Highland Cattle Association auction - one set of conventional straws and one set of heifer sexed straws 🧬

We are all waiting with bated breath to watch these little ones grow to have a sneak peak at what a few breeders here in the USA can be expecting a year from now. All have been born unassisted with moderate birth weights.

Register to bid and join us on Saturday!
