Had fun sharing my story and my treats with some Parker High School students today. Got to teach them about Sourdough and cottage baking. Also, a bit about burnout and how it’s very real 😬. Hope I inspired a few kids to go home and make some bread 🥖 today 😁!!

Sorry for the social media silence. I was recently hired by the Hedberg Library in Janesville and have been busy training. When I am not there I am filling my Christmas cookie orders. After having the kids home for over a year virtually learning I found this house much too quiet and lonely and decided to find employment outside the home. We are still hoping to do farmers markets and some pizza nights on the farm this spring and summer. If you would like to place an order please reach out to me at [email protected]. I am booked with cookie orders until after Christmas. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas 🎄!!

No baking this week. Still waiting on the oven repair. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

11/14/2021

Due to a broken oven and dishwasher I will not be able to bake this week. The repair person comes Monday to take a look. We are hoping they can be repaired since new appliances are not easy to come by or overly affordable right now. It seems my conviction for home baking is definitely being tested. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Since I am still laid up with a bum ankle I thought I would give a short little description of the farm and who I am.

I am Karen (Pratt) Andersen and I am the 4th generation of my family to live on the farm. My kiddos are the 5th and we would love for there to be many future generations on this property. My grandpa Pratt was born in the farmhouse we now live in. Both him and my father went to school at the one room school house on the corner, it is now a hair salon. My parents both worked at my aunt Linda's store which was then The Leyden Store, it is now 33 Feeds. They did this while farming dairy cows and teaching full time and raising small children. I have been told that my family immigrated here from Leiden in the Netherlands. We are not certain that is how this small, unincorporated town of Leyden got its name but it does seem like an odd coincidence.

Two and a half years ago my parents moved off the family farm and my husband and I moved from the westside of Janesville onto the farm that I was born on. We both agree that this is one of the best decisions we have made. We love all the space and all our animals. When COVID hit I had to pivot with the times. I began baking and soon selling my baked goods. I have since left my career in Travel to run the farm and bake full time.

I come from a long line of bakers. Both my grandmothers and my mom were an are exceptional bakers. Some of my recipes have been passed down over the years and are tried and true and loved. Others are from my own collection and are covered in notes as well as butter and eggs. They are not pretty but the food I create out of these messy recipes are delicious and kid tested!! I love taking a few local and fresh ingredients and creating the most beautiful rustic loaves of bread or pizzas or whatever I am in the mood to bake that week. The eggs are from my own happy hens and I try to grow many of my own ingredients.

Our dream is to start pizzas on the farm. We are hoping this will happen this spring/summer. Our next step is finding an affordable food truck or trailer and converting it into our kitchen. Our customers, so all of you, are the ones helping to make this possible. Family Farms are a dying gem and we want to not only keep this one alive but also make it thrive for the future generations. It has been a difficult fall with illness, a sprained ankle, and BUSY kid schedules but we are trying to get back at it. Please come check out our online store. Pick up orders are at our Century Farm Wednesday evenings. If you ever have any questions or want to place a private order you can reach me at [email protected] or here on FB and Messenger. Send you friends and neighbors to our square sites if they are looking for fresh home baked goodies https://prattfamilyfarm.square.site/

If you made it to the end of this post THANK YOU!! We truly appreciate all of our customers!

*ATTENTION*

I will not be doing my scheduled bake this week. Rolled my ankle and heading in for an X-ray tomorrow. Been ordered to stay off it. I have refunded those that have already ordered and paid this week. If it’s not fractured it is one heck of a sprain and needs to heal. Hoping for a quick recovery 🤞🏻🤞🏻.

****Cancelled****
I REALLY hate to do this but I have to cancel this weeks bake. Rolled my ankle really bad yesterday and thinking it may be fractured. I am going into my doctor tomorrow and will know more then. As for now I have to stay off it and keep it elevated. For those that have already ordered and paid I am refunding your money. So sorry!!

Orders are open this week!! This tree in the front yard is showing off for all the bread lovers who come to get their goodies on Wednesday. You can order Bacon Cheddar bread made with Decaturs bacon cheddar cheese, yum! You can also get a loaf of White Sandwich bread. I also have Cinnamon Swirl bread on the menu which makes the best French Toast!!! It is pretzel week so you can get your pretzels as either traditional pretzels 🥨, soup bowl pretzels (excellent with beer cheese soup) or as pretzel buns for burgers, or any sandwich meat. Let’s not forget the cookies!!! This week we have the VERY popular Lemon Lavender Butter Cookies or our Chocolate Espresso Crinkle Cookie, which did win a blue ribbon at the fair this year 😁. Click on this link: https://prattfamilyfarm.square.site/ to order. Let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything you would like to see on next weeks menu. I also take private orders at [email protected]. Thanks for shopping local and supporting family farms!!!

Saw this ad in a group I follow and just had to share it here. There are so many female led farms out there. Since my husband works 40+ (probably more like 60+) hours a week away from this farm I am the one who takes care of most things concerning the farm. I would have to say my husband married a hobby farmer. Have a great Friday everyone!

The Pratt Family Farm

The Andersen’s would like to welcome you to the Pratt Family Farm. I, Karen Andersen, am the 4th generation of Pratt’s living on the Family Farm. I am the middle daughter of Rich and Ruth Pratt, yes, the one who froze her feet by the old milk house. We moved onto this farm May of 2019 and quickly added some animals. We now have 25 chickens, 2 donkeys, 4 goats, 3 cats, 2 dogs, 2 parakeets, 1 Flemish Giant bunny, and 3 children. I created this page so that everyone can share their memories, photos, and stories of this farm. I also want to keep all the people who feel connected with this property informed as to what is happening on the farm. I look forward to hearing stories of the past and I will share our stories of the present.

Thank You,

The Andersen’s (Josh, Karen, Sophie, Lucy, and Colin)
