Why District 6?
The farm is home to the brick, 1-room District No. 6 schoolhouse, established in 1904. While the schoolhouse is not conducive to any farm operations, it does serve as a nostalgic reminder of our past and the core of our farm name, District 6 Farms.
After several different “hobby farming” experiments, District 6 Farms was founded in the Spring of 2015 when Austin and Kristen Witt (along with some family and friends) hand planted 3,700 blackberry plants in 300 ft. long rows on a 5 acre plot. Many hours of labor are poured into the field even before one berry is picked with the processes of pruning, training, and weeding. It actually takes 6.7 miles of walking to weedeat the whole field! When harvest finally arrives, the farm annually produces over 50,000 lbs of fresh blackberries for the fresh market and generates 2,100 bottles of blackberry wine at a local winery. After the season comes to an end, the plants are continually trained and the old growth is cut back. When colder temperatures arrive, the trellises are laid down and winter cover blankets, along with 4,000 sandbags to hold down the cover, are placed over each row of plants to protect them from the Midwestern winter. Once temperatures rise again, the plants are uncovered and the trellises are partially raised, preparing once again for another harvest cycle.
