About a year ago, I was scrolling Facebook when I came across a Silkie goat. My first thought was, “What in the world is this adorable creature?”

I immediately contacted the breeder and made arrangements to go get him. Then life happened.
That same night, I went to an auction and somehow managed to lock myself out of my car. Getting my keys back cost every extra dollar I had, and the deal fell through. Needless to say, I was absolutely heartbroken.
Instead of giving up, I started researching Silkies and learning everything I could about the breed. Along the way, I discovered that if you wanted to register them, you needed a herd name.

A herd name?

Since Silkies are fainting goats, the name Falling Oaks Falling Goats (chosen by Carissa) was born. What started as a funny idea quickly became a goal. I knew the cost of quality Silkie goats meant this dream probably wouldn’t happen anytime soon, but I was determined.
One goat turned into a dream. The dream turned into a plan. And the plan turned into a lot of hard work, patience, and persistence.

Today, I received this in the mail, and it’s official.
Falling Oaks Falling Goats is now a registered herd.

I may or may not have cried a little when I opened the envelope. 🥹

And now that dream is becoming reality. KRM Rocky the Balboa and KRM Billy Jean are our first Silkie goats. They are currently in training and will be heading to the show ring for the first time in October.

Sometimes the dreams that seem furthest away are the ones that mean the most when they finally come true. ❤️

And thank you to Ophelia Marie for the frame 🥰

Something I’ve been seeing lately in other goat groups is ORF being mistaken for insect bites, allergies, or other skin issues.

This is important because ORF (Contagious Ecthyma, also called Soremouth) is a contagious viral disease that can spread between goats and can also infect humans. While it usually isn’t fatal, it can cause significant discomfort, nursing difficulties in kids, and secondary infections if not managed properly.
If you suspect ORF:
🐐 Wear gloves when handling affected animals.🐐 Avoid picking at or removing scabs.🐐 Isolate affected animals when possible.🐐 Disinfect equipment and feeders that may have come into contact with lesions.🐐 Monitor for signs of secondary infection.

ORF lesions are most commonly found around the mouth and nose, but they can also appear on the eyelids, ears, eyebrows, face, teats, and occasionally other areas of the body.

I’ve attached an infographic that explains what ORF is, how lesions progress, how it spreads, and what precautions should be taken.

As always, this information is intended to help goat owners recognize potential issues early. If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, consult your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
