LS Boanz was a serious man. Too serious.

He wore serious shoes. He had a serious haircut that hadn't changed since 1987. He balanced his checkbook for fun and thought "extra butter" was a reckless financial decision.

Then came The Popcorn Incident.

It started on a Tuesday. LS decided he was going to be healthy. He bought one of those air poppers. No oil. No butter. Just hot air and disappointment.

He plugged it in, poured in the kernels, and pressed the button.

Nothing happened for 10 seconds. Then — POP! — one single kernel shot out like a sniper and hit him right in the forehead.

He stared at it. It stared back.

He ate it. It was terrible.

But then, curiosity got him. He tried again. This time he put a little too many kernels in.

The machine started shaking. Rattling. Smoking like a Baptist church barbecue pit on Sunday.

BRRRRRAP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP!

Popcorn erupted like a volcano. It covered his kitchen counter. It covered his dog. It covered his serious shoes. LS was standing knee-deep in popcorn in his own kitchen at 2:15 PM on a Tuesday, and he started laughing for the first time in about 12 years.

He scooped up a handful and took it to his neighbor, Miss Delores, who said, "Boy, you finally learned how to cook?"

That was it. That was the switch.

LS Boanz quit being serious.

He started experimenting. He made cajun popcorn. Pickle popcorn. He tried to make praline popcorn and glued his pan shut for three days.

He started taking a little brown bag of his "Boanz Blew-It Popcorn" to the barbershop. Then to the hardware store. Then people started asking for it.

"LS, you got that crazy corn today?"

Now, LS Boanz runs the world's smallest, least efficient, most delicious popcorn stand outside the movie theater. He doesn't work AT the theater — he works OUTSIDE the theater, telling people, "Don't pay $9 for theirs. Pay $5 for mine and I'll tell you the ending."

He still wears serious shoes. But now they're always full of popcorn crumbs.

He says popcorn changed his life because it taught him the two great truths:
1. If you hold in too much heat for too long, you WILL explode all over the kitchen.
2. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just pop off.
And he still keeps that first single kernel that hit him in the forehead. He keeps it taped to his air popper with a little label that says "THE BOSS."
