Meet the Super Scallop Oyster!

One of my all-time favorite creations and a strain that helped put Mossy Creek Mushrooms on the map in my early breeding days. With its dense, layered clusters and beautiful ivory caps, the Super Scallop is every bit as tasty as it is unique.

Strains like this don't happen by accident—they're the result of careful selection, patience, and a whole lot of curiosity.

Want to learn how to create mushrooms of your own? Join us for our Mushroom Breeding Class with Dr. Ed Grand on June 20th! We'll dive into the principles and techniques behind developing new strains and selecting for desirable traits.

Find our online mentorships and classes under the Learn tab on our website.

Moon Pearls doing Moon Pearls things!

These customer grow photos absolutely made our day! Look at those chunky, blue-blushed clusters. Moon Pearls has a habit of producing fruits that are just a little different every time, and we're here for it.

Moon Pearls traces its origins back to a spontaneous mutation of our King Blue Oyster, first discovered by Jacob Howard. He was kind enough to send it our way, and we've spent the time since selecting and stabilizing the line. We're incredibly excited to be able to share this unique strain with the mushroom community.

A huge thank you to everyone who sends us photos of their grows. Seeing our cultures thriving in your grow rooms and labs is one of the best parts of what we do.

Apparently, Dr. Silurian's Elixir of Mycelial Mastery is so good we've got cordyceps trying to grow on the leftovers stuck to the stir bar!

Not exactly the intended use... but I'll take it as a vote of confidence.

If you want to feed your liquid cultures the same high-performance premix we use around the Mossy Creek lab, give the Elixir a try.

Live May 21st, 2026 • 5 PM Eastern

Thursday night we’re headed back into the madness.

As always, we’ll be taking mushroom cultivation questions live—cultivation, genetics, biology, lab work, troubleshooting, business questions, or wherever the conversation decides to wander.

Weather permitting, we’re also going to experiment a little.

We’ll be trialing some resawing on spalting logs and putting our cardboard spawn to work while we’re at it. Should make for a fun mix of mushroom talk, woodworking, fungal ecology, and practical experimentation.

A lot of what we do around here is finding ways to integrate biology into systems that make sense—sometimes that means the lab, sometimes the garden, and sometimes it means standing over logs with a saw seeing what happens.

Bring questions.

Bring ideas.

Bring rabbit holes.

See y’all Thursday at 5 PM Eastern.

Mushroom Breeding is coming to Mossy Creek Mushrooms.

Join us June 20th, 2026 from 1 PM – 7 PM Eastern for an in-depth online Mushroom Breeding class taught by Dr. Ed Grand.

If you’ve ever wanted to move beyond simply growing mushrooms and start understanding how new genetics are built, selected, stabilized, and refined—this class is for you.

We’ll be digging into topics like:

Strain genetics and heredity
Isolation and phenotype selection
Crossing and breeding techniques
Culturing, stability, and maintaining genetics
Record keeping and building breeding logs

Whether your goal is creating commercial production strains, exploring fungal diversity, or simply understanding breeding at a deeper level, this class is built to help you level up.

Only 20 spots are available.

Find it now under the Learn Tab → Online Mentorships on our website.

We’re trying something a little different this week.

I’m going to kick things off by walking through how I make cardboard spawn—simple, low-tech, and a great tool to have in your back pocket.

After that, we’ll roll straight into open Q&A like usual.

This stream is also me playing around with cameras, switchboards, and a few new setups, so expect a bit of experimentation along the way.

If you’ve got questions about mushroom cultivation, your grow, your setup, or anything else you’re working through, bring them.

As always, I’ll answer what I can—and if I don’t know something, we’ll figure it out together.

See you Thursday at 5 PM Eastern.

New strain drop.

KBPF1 Oyster is now live.

This one’s a cross between our Classic King Blue and the original Pathfinder’s Oyster—the very first oyster we ever bioprospected. It carries that history with it.

Big, soft stems from both parents, a wide temperature range from the wild side, and a noticeable increase in blotch resistance over King Blue. It’s a little firmer too, which I’ve been really happy with.

It’s aggressive. It moves. And it produces.

If you keep your room 70°F or below, you’ll really see what it’s capable of in both color and texture.
This one’s been a long time coming.
