It’s early morning at the Cole County Fairgrounds. Fall Festivsl opens at 8:00 am and runs til 3:00 pm. Come out and support local makers of all types. ESPECIALLY Four921 Spoons & Brooms, LLC (located in the Beer Garden shelter) and Maggie Moos Designs (just outside same shelter). The weather couldn’t be more wonderful to be out and moving, chatting and buying handmade goods. See ya at the fairgrounds.

Today marks the first day of hand crafted spoons and brooms business open for sale. Am excited about what lies ahead.

Finished spoon from redbud wood harvested from my side yard. Debarked with my draw knife, split with my Robin Wood axe into billet form. Saw cut to form the crank with a pruning saw. Shaped with Beaver Craft straight handle draw knife. Then hand shaped with Mora 106 knife, Morakniv hooked knife and Wood Tools open hook knife. The key to a fine smooth finish is sharp tools and small, slow cuts. Big ones caused the wood fibers to tear out. First time kolrosing (♥️ FAMILY) into a spoon handle using my pocket knife and applying finely ground 1850 ground coffee into cuts. Finished off with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil. Special thanks to Sean Hearn for showing his many skilled techniques via Facebook live feeds. PS - I wear cut proof gloves throughout the entire cutting process.
