Hard to believe this was three years ago today.

August 31, 2023.

We had just finished up at the Ag Facility in Union County, Georgia, and were leaving when things went wrong. Our cattle chute ended up off the road, down the bank and buried in the woods.

Looking at these pictures again got me thinking…

What if we had just left it there?

Twenty years from now, somebody could be cleaning up those woods and come across an old cattle chute covered in vines and grown up in the trees. You know they’d stand there scratching their head wondering, “How in the world did this thing get down here?”

Well, this is how.

A heavy wrecker came in, got hold of it and pulled it back up that bank. And believe it or not, after everything that chute went through getting down there, the damage was pretty minor.

I guess that’s a pretty good testament to the fellow who built it, which happens to be me and my gorilla welding skills. 😂 It may not always be pretty, but apparently it’ll hold!

We got it home, made the repairs and brought it back to life.

Three years later, we’re still working cattle, and that old chute is still part of Martin’s Cattle Services. It just has a few more scars and one heck of a story behind them.

When you’ve been in the cattle business long enough, you’re going to have some days you remember more than others.

August 31, 2023 was definitely one of them.
