In a world of corn and beans, we have all the other seed: cover crops, forage, turf, alfalfa, and natives. Small seed. Big impact. 🌱

We are owned and operated by two Iowa farm families who believe in building strong soil and strong rural communities. Before they were business partners, Bill Frederick and James Holz were 4-H buddies and classmates growing up in Greene County, Iowa, near Jefferson. In 2014, they founded Iowa Cover Crop (ICC) as a way to help a few neighbors and diversify their farm operations. ICC focuses on specialty seeds...basically anything other than corn and soybeans. We have a broad selection of cover crops, native blends for CRP, and grasses for pastures and waterways. Combined, Bill and James have 20 years of experience growing cover crops. They have personally seeded rye grain, rye grass, oats, spring and winter wheat, peas, hairy vetch, common vetch, rapeseed, forage kale, crimson clover, radish, and turnips on our own farms. With our diverse first-hand experience, we can help pick the best cover crop for your operation. Our specialty is full service seed and application. If you provide us with the goals for your seeding and a budget, we will help you identify the best seed for your situation. Once we get your maps, our experienced aerial and high clearance applicators will plant your cover crops. All that is required of the producer is a phone call! When they aren’t selling cover crops, Bill and James can be found raising row crops, cattle, small grains, and kids on their respective family farms in Greene County.

Here’s our cover crop progress in the organic bean field. If you are keeping track this field has had 4 different species this growing year: mustard, soybeans, oats, and rapeseed. 👏

From green fields, to green lawns, Iowa Cover Crop has the seed you need! Here's a couple examples of projects we've helped customers with this fall:

1️⃣ A custom blend of rye, oats, turnip, radish, and rapeseed drilled in Carroll County on September 10th, 2026.

2️⃣ ICC Groundskeeper (90% turf type fescue, 10% Kentucky Bluegrass) seeded by Kerkhoff Covers September 12th...this progress photo was taken on September 28th. 😲

We’re celebrating National 4-H Week 🍀

From the Cover Crop Kids to the grown-ups, 4-H is a pretty big part of our crew.

Our kids stay busy showing livestock, tackling static projects, and attending 4-H activities throughout the year. Meanwhile, the adults are volunteering as Clover Kids leaders, Earth Day speakers, fair superintendents, and, of course, full-time cheerleaders from the sidelines.

4-H has been part of our families for generations, and we’re proud to keep that tradition going with Greene County Iowa 4H!

Well the moisture hasn’t been an issue, but we sure could use some ☀️.

Come along with James and Ira as they scout this field we drone applied in mid-September. This was a blend of radish, turnip, rapeseed, and hairy vetch.

Greene County Homecoming 2026 had us going down memory lane hardcore. Let’s just say none of us envisioned the cover crop industry as our calling. 🤣
