The GVSU Sustainable Agriculture Project:
seeds sustainability and cultivates leadership

The Sustainable Agriculture Project is a physical place, and a scientific station, where students can go to research plants, the environment, human-environmental interaction, systems thinking, and community. It is also a laboratory in that it is a space where students can get their hands dirty while learning quantitative and critical thinking skills relating to soil, water, plant life, climate cha

nge, and the environment. It is also a working studio space and gallery for artists, a field site with a ready-made community of people on a small working farm perfect for sociological study. Last week Rep Hillary Scholten visited the SAP! We loved having the opportunity to show her all the amazing attributes of the farm and discussing the action we’re taking in our community. One of Rep. Scholten’s bills Promoting Access to Local Agriculture Act aids in local agriculture being able to support its surrounding community. Bringing affordable local food to grocery stores! We’re excited for what’s to come at the SAP in this upcoming year at GVSU! Follow along for more exciting updates! 🌱🫶

The SAP crew helped out our community partner, New City Neighbors Farm, harvest garlic and beautiful summer squash yesterday! Building relationships among young farmers is essential as we share skills, ideas, and care for each other and the earth!! 🧄🧛

Thank you Blandford Nature Center Farm for showing us the ropes and trusting us to plant some of your tomatoes! The season looks to be prolific with many goat bleats and lots of tomatoes! More farmer-to-farmer collabs!!

Stop by on the last two Wednesdays of the semester for seeds, plant starts, and growing materials.
