And a Globe Trotter to boot.

Bob Gibson finished his career with 251 wins and 255 complete games. Read that again. He completed more games than he won. In today's game, a starter who goes seven innings gets a standing ovation. Gibson went the distance as a default setting.

That stat tells you everything about who he was on the mound. He didn't pitch to a number. He didn't look to the bullpen. He took the ball and he kept it. Across 17 seasons in St. Louis, Gibson set the standard for what it meant to be the guy. Two Cy Youngs, two World Series MVPs, a 1.12 ERA in 1968 that literally changed the rules of the game. And through all of it, he finished what he started.

255 complete games. That number belongs to a different era. It also belongs to a different breed.

The incoming administration will doubtlessly be attacking programs that address food insecurity. We are looking for volunteers to help us grow more food for donation to the VT Food Bank and local agencies as well.
The difference between involvement and commitment can be understood in terms of bacon and eggs. The chicken is involved, the pig is committed. If you are able to reliably provide help, we would love to hear from you.
Hoping that 2025 is happy and healthy for you!!

Wind howling out of the south driving a squall, what my father-in-law used to describe as the north wind going back home. As is normal, the first day of spring and the first spring day are far apart.

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture publishes a monthly called Agriview, articles and advertisements. A disturbing piece this month indicates the parlous state of farming here, a full page on su***de prevention.
Dairy farmers sell at wholesale, purchase at retail and all under the uncertainty of a changing climate. Not for the faint of heart.

Lack of staff has made our mail delivery. Funny to think that when Rural Free Delivery became widespread, at the turn of the last century, it was the horse and buggy equivalent of broadband.

As derived from Latin, the word solstice means the sun stands still. Astronomically it means the day when the sun is lowest in the sky at noon (start of winter) or at its highest on the first day of summer. For the ten days either side of each of these events, the increase or decrease of day length is barely perceptible. Grateful for more light as we move toward summer.
