Another cold, winter day seems like a perfect opportunity to share part 3 of our series of "winter questions with Amasa Hill Farm." 🐄❄️

"This has been such a hard winter! How do you keep your cows safe and warm when it's so cold and snowy??"

First and foremost: cows, especially black angus, are naturally adapted to thrive in cold conditions. Each season, they put on a heavy winter coat in preparation for the cold weather. However, we take it a step further to ensure they are comfortable through the winter. Each and every animal on the farm is housed inside our barns through the winter. They are provided 24/7 access to fresh, clean drinking water and high energy forage to maintain their body condition. We also provide fresh sawdust and chopped hay bedding on a regular basis to ensure their comfort. While our barns are designed with ample ventilation for animal health, we have the ability to close fabric curtains that serve as the "walls" of our barn. This gives us the opportunity to provide additional shelter and preserve our herd's body heat inside the barn in the extreme cold and wind we have been experiencing lately. All this goes a long way to preserve the health and welfare of our herd!

Added bonus: by housing our animals inside through the winter, we get to collect and store manure for use as crop fertilizer in the spring (which hopefully comes someday soon!!). 🌽🌱🌾

Next up in our series of winter questions with Amasa Hill Farm, we have: "What are you doing to that old corn field??"

Each season, as part of our conservation and stewardship goals, we plant cover crops! We spend time after harvest to no-till plant cover crop seeds such as rye, wheat, triticale, clover, radish, etc. into remaining corn stubble. This is a huge step for protecting our soil from erosion, storing valuable nutrients for the next season, and providing w**d suppression to reduce our usage of chemical herbicide!

Make sure when you see this machine in the field, wave hello or honk the horn at the "old farmer" on the tractor!! 🌱🌾🚜

We couldn’t have wanted to start Christmas morning any other way, besides in the barn! From all of the Johnson family, we wish you a warm and merry Christmas surrounded by those you love!!
